Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (Sept. 15, 2014) – Trey Starks earned a pair of top fives last Saturday during championship night at Skagit Speedway.

Starks drove for Doug Rutz in both the 360ci and sportsman classes, which marked his first-ever race in that division.

“Being in a new car it was a little different, but I adapted fairly quickly,” he said. “I went quick time in both of them.”

Starks set quick time in both classes. Since it was championship night, the top eight drivers in points for each class were involved in a scramble to line up the first four rows of the features. Qualifying results determined the rest of the lineups.

“It was kind of tough going out there for the features because you didn’t get to race any racing laps,” Starks said. “The only time we got to race with other cars was in hot laps.”

Starks lined up on the outside of the fourth row in both features since a car dropped out from each of the scrambles.

“The 360 main was the first one on the track,” he said. “It took us a couple of laps to get going. We picked them off one by one. Skagit is always a tough track to race on. We passed as many cars as we could. The top four were all within a half a straightaway coming to the finish line. There was no move to be made on a track like that.”

Starks finished with a fourth-place result.

He capped the night with the sportsman main event.

“On the first lap we went from eighth to third and a red came out,” he said. “On the restart we were passing for third going into turn three and I got into the infield a little bit. It was still a little wet. I did a half spin and lost six or seven spots. From the rest of the race it was fighting to battle from there. It was a bummer. I think we definitely could have won it if I didn’t make that mistake.”

Starks ended with a fifth-place finish, which marked his 10th top five of the season.

He will drive for Rutz this Friday and Saturday at Central Washington State Fair Raceway in Yakima, Wash., for the ASCS Northwest Region season finale.

“We’ve run really well there,” Starks said. “The last time we raced there we ran second and third. We’re still looking for a win there. It’d mean a lot to me to win in Yakima since we don’t run there very often.”
