It was set to be another awesome night for Josh Schneiderman in his hometown on Saturday night. He won the $2,000 305 feature from the fifth row at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, and had charged from ninth to second in the MOWA event. Unfortunately, a tangle with a lapped machine ended his bid for two wins and a sweep, but the Deuce Motorsports team will bounce back into action this week. On Thursday, they will compete at the Farley Speedway in Farley, Iowa with the Sprint Invaders, before taking on the World of Outlaws at the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota on Saturday.
A wet track saw most heats for the 31-car field see little passing. That was the case in Josh’s 305 heat, where he finished third after starting fourth. “In the 305, the lack of power stinks with a track like that,” he say. “You have to ride it out and see where it is. The cooler temperatures and the sun ducking in and out of the clouds made for a greasy track early in the night.”
The third place finish set up a starting spot inside row five for the feature. “I noticed in the Dash and B that guys were starting to run the bottom,” says Josh. “We had set the car up extremely loose and we changed it up. We were really tight early on in the feature. About six laps in, I was just hoping for a top five. We were just that bad. I kept moving the car around on the track and finally, about ten or twelve laps in we hit on something and started moving forward.”
Josh picked off cars gradually before picking off RJ Johnson for second on lap 15, and Donnie Steward for the lead on lap 20. “I was a little disappointed in all of the cautions,” he says. “We had old 410 tires on, so we had a harder tire on than most of the other guys. I needed green flag laps to keep the tires warm. When I’d get two or three laps strung together, I had a rocket ship, and it was a matter of me hitting my marks. We were perfect at that point. It’s always good to win. It was a quality class with a quality group of cars on Saturday.”
The slick track early in the night meant timing in later in the 410 field was advantageous. Josh timed in fifth quick after coming out 12th in the order. “I kind of wish we’d have been towards the back like (Brian) Brown and a couple of the other guys were,” he says. “I think the track was still getting the grease blown off when we were out. We’ve been on both sides of it this year, and we can’t seem to get a draw either way.”
Fifth quick meant starting inside row two where the track was still slick. Josh would nail down a transfer spot in fourth. “We needed to be on top for the momentum,” he says. “It was still greasy on the bottom where we were. It was just tough. Once you got in line, you finished where you started.”
Starting ninth in the MOWA main event, the team made a few last second adjustments after winning the 305 feature. “We determined where we wanted to go with stagger before the 305 feature,” says Josh. “The only thing I did was move the wing up a little bit. They did put a little more gear in it, but I wanted to leave the car free so I could move around a little bit.”
Similar to the 305 feature, Josh found his groove and jetted up to second. On a restart, he would have two lapped cars between him and the leader Brown. One of the lapped cars got sideways in turn two and collected him. “It was an unfortunate incident,” he says. “It was a racing deal. It was a bad deal. I hated it for my guys and my sponsors who work so hard and deserved a good run. I feel we were as good as Brown. I don’t know if we could have done anything with him, because we were running the same line, but it would have at least been an interesting race if we got in lapped traffic.”
The team rushed to get the car rolling and rejoin the race, but it was obviously crippled. “They did everything in their power,” says Josh of the team. “The front end was pushed six inches back. Both wings were bent up. They did what they could to make some laps. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.”
