Inside Line Promotions – LEESVILLE, La. (Sept. 7, 2014) – Ray Allen Kulhanek found a good luck charm in his newborn.

Kulhanek captured his second ASCS Gulf South Region win and his third victory of the season at Leesville 171 Speedway last Saturday when he competed for the first time since his daughter was born in August.

The event kicked off with Kulhanek making a last-lap pass to win his heat race after starting fourth.

“We went from fourth to second in the first turn and then I was all over the back of (Channin) Tankersley,” he said. “Where I was doing most of my damage was in turns one and two. We were fairly equal going through turns three and four. I changed my entry a little bit and it started picking me back up a little bit. We happened to get a caution on the white flag lap so we did a green-white-checkered finish. On the last lap I ran up four wheels in the fluff and whenever I got to about the center of turns one and two I turned down the track. I got a good enough run down into turns three and four where I could run in a little harder. I slid him and won it.”

That earned Kulhanek enough points to advance into the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 1 to start on the pole for the 25-lap main event.

“We got lucky and got away for the sevens and eights I’ve been drawing all year long,” he said. “I told my crew guys we’ve got the pole and I’m going to make the best of this deal.”

Kulhanek and outside polesitter Scottie McDonald slid each other in every corner for the first couple of laps during the main event.

“He slid me in turns one and two and I slid him back in turns three and four,” Kulhanek said. “We did the same the second lap and then I had the lead for good. We swapped spots four, five or six times. It was a good race between me and Scottie. I pulled away and then he caught me at the first lapped cars. I decided if they’re blocking the top I didn’t think anybody would drive around me. It gave him a good enough run where the next time around he was already on my bumper.”

Kulhanek thwarted another slide job in turns one and two midway through the race before he pulled away for the victory.

“We had a red flag with about five or six laps to go,” he said. “There were five lapped cars between me and second and third place. I knew taking off just to run clean laps and try not to make any mistakes. The whole race panned out for me. That was a nice change of pace.”

Kulhanek enters the ASCS Gulf South Region season finale on Sept. 27 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, second in the championship standings.
