Inside Line Promotions – WATSONVILLE, Calif. (Aug. 25, 2014) – Dominic Scelzi is looking forward to getting back on the track following a frustrating ending to the 54th annual Johnny Key Classic on Saturday.
“I made two big mistakes I’m disappointed in making,” he said. “All I can do is go to the next race and hope for a better outcome.”
Scelzi kicked off the prestigious event at Ocean Speedway by qualifying 18th quickest, which lined him up fifth in a qualifier.
“On the start I got caught behind the guy in front of me and lost a position,” he said. “I gained a position back and was right behind Craig Stidham. I thought I was going to end up running fifth. I had moved around a lot on the race track to find a line that was better for me. On the last lap I went down to the bottom. I don’t really know what happened, but I got in and got to where I had cleared him almost. At that point I realized I might have been ahead enough where he could see me and I could slide up in front. I ended up taking him out and I feel horrible about it.”
Scelzi finished with a fourth-place result, which earned him a transfer into the back of the main event.
“The feature was really slick and wide,” he said. “I got to the top and got going. I passed six or seven cars in the first couple of laps. Entering turn three there was a car that looked like he was going to go to the bottom. He actually ended up sliding to the top. I was in a bad spot and got up over the cushion. When I did it turned me sideways and I ended upside down.”
Scelzi’s team changed the top wing, but was unable to replace the Jacob’s Ladder before the race resumed. He was credited with a 22nd-place result following the early flip.
He will take this weekend off before a 360ci race on Sept. 3 at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif. Scelzi will then compete with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at the quarter-mile track on Sept. 5-6 during the Gold Cup.
