Scotty Thiel – Scores a Podium after Rough nights at Wilmot

A three day weekend was set for the STM #64 Sprint car team. Scotty pulled off on Friday due to an ill handling car after a midrace wreck and missed the main on Saturday due to a crash that wrecked the front end badly but managed to capture a second place podium finish at Seymour Speedway!

Friday night was the first night of two at Wilmot Raceway for the Kenosha County Fair special. Scotty went out towards the end of qualifying but managed to be 23rd quick out of 39 cars which placed him on the front row of the heat race event. A rough and tacky track made for very fast racing action and Scotty was able to get the jump on the start and never looked back. After ten laps of green flag action, Scotty pulled off another heat race victory. That made it three straight heat race wins for the young rookie. With that win, it placed Scotty to start seventh in the 30 lap A-main event. The field was set for the main and they prepared to take the green flag. After coming out of turn four they stormed down the front stretch. Scotty was stuck down on the bottom side of the track for the first few laps and did not gain any ground. A few laps were complete before a caution came out on the speedway. On the restart, Scotty just scrubbed the infield tire which broke the shock bolt on the left front of the car. The front end began to chatter badly and Scotty stopped on the backstretch. After going back to the work area, the team fixed the car and he tagged the rear of the field. After going back to green flag action, Thiel tried to work his way back up through the field but was struggling to get the car working. The leader got around Scotty going into turn three but hit a tractor tire in the infield and spun out, leaving nowhere to go for Thiel and he spun to avoid hitting the car but was caught up in the tangle. Nothing appeared to be wrong with the car and Scotty did fire the car back off. After going back to green, Thiel drove a few laps and pulled off as the car did not handle great. The team called it a night and tried to regroup for night number two.

Night number two did not go as planned either. After being the 28th out of 29 cars out for qualifying, Scotty ended up 21st quick and placed him seventh in the heat race. A very slick track condition made for passing to be difficult and Thiel struggled for ten laps to move forward. Scotty moved up to the sixth spot and battled for the fifth and final transfer spot after a late restart but was one car length short and had to work his way from the B-main in order to make it to the nights 36 lap Roger Iles Memorial A-main event. At the start of the B main the lead cars were bunched up coming for the green. Scotty charged to the high side of the track in turn one and jumped the cushion as a few cars scattered up the track. He managed to get back over the cushion but the car was too sideways and he stopped but got collected by a couple cars towards the back of the field. Too much damage was on the car to continue and that ended the night for the #64 team. It was the first main that the team did not make so far this IRA season.

To cap off an already rough couple nights of racing, the team had truck issues and were fortunate enough to have a fellow competitor loan a tow vehicle for the remaining portion of the weekend.

After arriving home early Sunday morning the team decided that they would just run the 360 car at Seymour for the final night of the three day race weekend. The track was in prime condition for the 360 car and Scotty managed to pull off 11th quick out of 26 cars in qualifying. That placed him to start third I the heat race event. After the field went green, Scotty tried to work the high side of the track but fell back several spots. He started to work the bottom grove and picked up the lost ground and ended up finishing third after ten laps were complete. After the invert was drawn, Scotty would start third in the 30 lap A-main event. The crew thrashed to get the car prepared and ready for the A-main as they encountered an oil leak after the heat race. They fixed it quickly and got Scotty out on the track. The field pushed off and began to line up. After coming out of turn four the green flag dropped. Scotty worked the low line like he did in the heat race and pulled up to the second spot on the first lap going down the back stretch. Three laps were complete and Scotty grabbed the lead coming out of turn two! He stormed out front and pulled away from the field by over a straight-a-way. Lap traffic started to be a factor for Thiel as he had to move around the track to get past a few cars. 20 laps were in the book and Thiel was struggling to get around a lap car and lost the lead coming down the front stretch. He battled back but was pinched in the middle of the track and lost ground. Once he was able to get past a few cars he was reeling the leader back in. With only three laps to go Scotty was still within half a straight of the leader. Lap traffic was heavy again and Thiel had to check up on the bottom side to not hit an infield tire and lost a little ground that he just recently gained. After 30 laps of straight green flag action was complete, Scotty crossed the line in a close second place finishing position.

Overall it was a solid night for the team after encountering a rough start to the weekend. Scott Thiel Motorsports would like to extend their appreciation for the Mock Racing team for allowing them to use their tow vehicle to get the trailer back home and to Seymour.

Next up on the schedule is this Saturday night at the LaSalle Speedway in LaSalle, IL for the 5th Annual Bill Waite Jr. Memorial race paying $4,000 to win and $500 to start!
