Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 13, 2014) – Big Game Motorsports driver Craig Dollansky registered his eighth career top-five finish during the 54th annual FVP Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s General Stores last weekend.
Dollansky kicked off the biggest event in sprint car racing last Friday at Knoxville Raceway, where he set quick time during preliminary night qualifying for the first time this season.
“It was something that we continued to work on and get ourselves better in that area,” he said. “Fortunately by the time the Nationals arrived we got it right.”
That lined the Big Game Treestands car up on the outside of the fourth row of a heat race, which locked the top-four finishers into the main event.
“That can make or break you sometimes at the Nationals,” he said. “That format is tough. That’s the way it has always been. Sometimes the heat races are the best racing of the weekend.”
Dollansky charged from eighth to fifth place in the first half of the heat race before he methodically reeled in the fourth-place driver.
“We picked up momentum on him coming off the bottom of turn two,” Dollansky said. “I was trying to work both parts of the race track. Toward the end of the heat race we were getting freed up.”
Dollansky made a last-turn pass on the final lap to secure the fourth position and a spot in the 25-lap feature, which he started eighth.
“I think we were ok in the main event,” he said. “We got into the fifth spot with a couple of laps to go and started running out of fuel. It died on the backstretch on the final lap and we got it fired back up again. Fortunately it gave me enough to get the checkered flag. In the end it put us in a good spot for Saturday.”
The Big Game Treestands car finished sixth in the preliminary feature. That, combined with the qualifying and heat race points, locked him into Saturday’s $150,000-to-win feature in the seventh starting position.
Dollansky spent most of the 50-lap race battling for a top five before he made a late bid for a spot on the podium.
“We had a mechanical issue that was slowing us up, but I definitely didn’t want to see that last caution flag,” he said. “We probably would have been better off just racing through the end. We ended up getting fourth place out of it. You’ve got the strongest race teams in the world there so I’m happy for our entire race team.”
Dollansky’s fourth-place result marked his eighth top five and 14th top 10 in 18 Knoxville Nationals main events.
“For the time me and Guy (Forbrook) have been together to get the team prepared for the Knoxville Nationals, we had a strong run and a good result,” he said.
The Big Game Treestands team will take this weekend off before resuming competition at Knoxville Raceway on Aug. 23 for the season finale.
