Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 5, 2014) – Brandon Hanks wasn’t concerned with results as much as he was logging laps last weekend during the 24th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals.
He did just that during the three-day event at Knoxville Raceway.
“We wanted laps,” he said. “That’s all we wanted to do. The day we qualified it kept raining and they kept calling us back for hot laps. That was great for me.”
Hanks said he learned and gained confidence each lap at the half-mile track.
“We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish,” he said. “I’m very happy with how the weekend went. As the weekend went along I got better and better every lap. That place is tricky. The only way you are going to get better is with more laps.”
Hanks kicked off the 360 Knoxville Nationals by qualifying 32nd during his preliminary night last Thursday. That narrowly missed a spot in the heat race inversion and it started Hanks on the inside of the fourth row of his heat race.
After placing seventh in the heat race, Hanks finished where he started – 11th – in the B Main.
“The starts were the craziest,” he said. “I might pass a couple of cars, but two more would pass me back. Once we got strung out I stayed in the same spot.”
Based on preliminary points, Hanks lined up on the outside of the second row during the D Main on Saturday. He manuevered to a third-place finish to earn a transfer into the back of the C Main.
“The biggest thing that taught me was how big clean air is,” he said. “I never quite understood that until I was running up front in the D Main and then had to start at the back of the C Main. That was a confidence booster.”
His weekend ended with an 18th-place result in the C Main.
“I learned a lot,” he said. “I’m so happy with how much I learned and how much better I am. I’m not intimidated by that track anymore. We made a ton of laps and we made it to the C Main, which was my goal.”
Hanks will take this weekend off before tackling a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla., on Aug. 16.
