TULSA, Okla. (July 27, 2014) - One of the crown-jewels of the 360cid Sprint Car world is without a doubt the Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals. The $10,000 to win event kicks off its 24th edition on Thursday, July 31 and runs through Saturday, August 2 as the start of the Southern Iowa Sprint Week.
At the time of writing, the entry list of the Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals includes 94 drivers representing 22 United States as well as Australia and Canada.
Previous Champions entered number five with Terry McCarl (1996, 2001, and 2009), Jeff Swindell (2002), Danny Lasoski (1995), Billy Alley (2004 and 2005), and Wayne Johnson (2000 and 2008) looking for another title.
The talk of the town is the fact that defending champion, Shane Stewart, will not be in attendance as he will be competing at the I-55 Speedway.
So far, 16 rookies have entered the 24th Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals.
In looking at the number of times drivers have entered the prestigious event, none currently entered have raced the 360 Nationals more than Matt Moro who is scheduled to make his seventeenth appearance in the $10,000 to win event. Moro's best finish came in 2000 with a runner up finish in the championship event. Moro has made the final race on eight occasions (1999-02, '04, '07-08, '10).
With several drivers making the early trip to the "Mid-West Mecca of Mud" this past Saturday night, Justin Henderson grabbed the win in the Eagle Power Equipment No. 1 with a closing lap pass on Josh Baughman for the South Dakota driver's second victory of the season at the famed half-mile.
The 2013 edition of the Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals brought 103 drivers to the Knoxville Raceway. The record for driver attendance was set in 2006 with 137 making the call.
The full top-ten of the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real have entered the 360 Knoxville Nationals. Running under a different format with qualifying setting the lineups for Heat Races, the event pays all who draw in 100 show up points on their qualifying night.
Jason Johnson has topped the 360cid division on five occasions at the Knoxville Raceway along with two with the 410cid Sprint Cars. Jeff Swindell's lone 360cid win came in 2002 with winning the Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals but has six wins in 410cid competition. While Johnny Herrera doesn't have a 360cid win at Knoxville, the crafty veteran does have two track championships along with 17 wins in 410cid competition. Matt Covington is the only other driver in the National Tour top-ten that has a victory at the Knoxville Raceway.
Tickets for the 24th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals are still on sale and can be purchased at the Box Office or online at http://www.knoxvilleraceway.com/Tickets.aspx.
Each night of competition gets underway at 7:15 P.M. (CT). Live coverage can be found in several ways, including live online audio at http://www.racinboys.com. Format descriptions and 360 Nationals stats are kept by Bill Wright and displayed at http://www.knoxvilleraceway.com.
Format:
The 360 Nationals encompasses a three-day format. With points meaning everything, and every wheel turned on the track meaning points, there is no time for a break.
Thursday and Friday:
Order of Events: Hot laps, Qualifications, Last Chance Heats (if needed), 5 Heats, C feature, B feature, A feature.
Qualifications - 200 points are awarded for quick timer, 198 for second quick, 196 for third, etc.
Only the top 50 qualifiers make the heats, the rest are put in the last chance heats in which the first eight finishers will fill the back of that night's C feature (starting in the sixth row).
Last Chance Heats (for drivers out of the top 50 in Qual.) – 50 points awarded to the winner, 47 for 2nd, etc.
Heats - 100 points are awarded for the heat winner, points go down by three: 97, 94, 91, 88, etc.
Heats have an invert of six. Top four finishers go to A, next four to B, last two to C.
***C feature – Top two finishers go to back of the B. Third place is worth 96 pts., 2nd is 94, etc.
B feature – The top four finishers transfer to the tail of the A. The B awards 142 points for fifth, 140 for sixth and so on by twos.
A feature - The A feature points are the same as time trials: 200, 198, 196 etc. This explains how a driver cannot make the A, but if he timed well may have more points than someone who did make the A.
First tie breaker is finish position in respective main event. Next tie breaker is rank in time trial. Other tie breaking criteria may be implemented if needed.
A perfect score (quick time, heat win, feature win) is 500. Cars line up for Saturday's championship straight up by points earned on their qualifying night.
Saturday:
Saturday Events: E feature, D feature, C feature, B feature, Knoxville Nationals Championship feature.
With the exception of the B feature which takes the top four finishers to the tail of the 360 Nationals Championship, all other features transfer the top two finishers to the tail of the next event (if there are scratches, there may be more taken for a particular event).
