Inside Line Promotions – PLACERVILLE, Calif. (July 21, 2014) – Dominic Scelzi rebounded from a slow start to score his best career result at Placerville Speedway on Saturday.

Scelzi kicked off the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event by qualifying 18th quickest around the high-banked bullring.

“We went there with the setup that we have been running, but we were a little tight and it killed us in qualifying with the big cushion,” he said. “We were just too tight and that put us behind the eight ball.”

Scelzi then advanced from sixth to fifth place in his heat race, which was enough to lock the Roth Motorsports backed team into the main event.

“We were fortunate enough to get to the transfer, but didn’t really have much for the top four,” he said. “I talked to Peter (Murphy) over the phone before the main event and we were both on the same page. We changed a ton of stuff around and we were amazing in the main event.”

After starting on the inside of the ninth row, Scelzi began to move forward on the second lap before nearly being involved in a crash.

“I didn’t get as good of a start as I’d like,” he said. “I got going and around two cars on the second lap. A car underneath me kept coming up and knocked my nose wing down. That took away my ability to run the top. But without the nose wing it lightened me up to get off the corner. However, as the race went on and got slicker it hurt me. We were fortunate enough that the bottom was really good and a lot of guys were moving up throughout the race.”

Scelzi stayed on the bottom groove throughout the main event. He was up to sixth place when a late red flag allowed his team to pull the nose wing up enough to allow air underneath.

“That helped tremendously,” he said. “I jumped up to fifth on the restart and on the last lap someone went spinning and I was able to miss him and get to fourth.”

Scelzi’s fourth-place result was his fourth top five of the season and his second in a row. It also earned him the Hard Charger Award.

“We definitely rebounded pretty good,” he said. “We were really excited, especially with how the night started. For one, it was great to finish. For two, to run up through there and get a top five was awesome.”

Scelzi will return to competition with the King of the West this Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., for the Peter Murphy Classic.
