Covington Shows Speed With Third Place Finish In Montana

Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (July 16, 2014) Matt Covington had a strong finish last Friday night mixed with some bad luck on Saturday to cap off the weekend. Matt picked up a 3rd place finish at the Electric City Speedway on Friday night along with a 13th place finish at Billings Motorsports Park on Saturday with the ASCS National Tour.

On Friday night Matt and the team took on the Electric City Speedway in Montana.

After a good heat race draw, Covington would capitalize to get the heat win and earn a spot in the coveted redraw.

The first place finish in the heat would line Covington up in the 3rd starting position for the feature after the redraw.

With the feature underway, Matt would find himself fighting hard dicing it up with the leaders. Once Covington worked into second he would then set his sights on the leader. As the two raced into lap traffic, Matt would find himself being shuffled back to the third with a slight bobble on corner exit. With the laps starting to wind down, Covington would work back up to the second place car, stalking him trying to find a way around. As the checkers fell Matt would ultimately have to settle for a 3rd place finishing position.

With a podium finish in the books from Friday, Covington and the team made the trip to Billings Motorsports Park in Montana on Saturday.

After another sold pill draw, Matt would find himself lining up in the second row for his heat. With a good handling car, Covington fought hard racing with leader but would be forced to settle for second.

The second place finish would line Matt up in the 12th starting spot for the A Main.

At the drop of the green, Covington would find himself battling his way toward the front. Matt would battle his way inside the top ten midway into the feature before the first round of bad luck would strike for the night. With cars spinning and crashing in front of him, Matt would be caught up in the midrace accident. Luckily Matt would be able to escape without damage and tag the rear of the field. Covington would go to work from the rear racing back up into the top ten before the second unavoidable accident of the night would happen. While racing side by side with the tenth place car, Covington would be collected as the inside car spun up the track and collected him. However after the second incident of the night, the end result would be a wounded mount for Covington. The damage would force Matt to limp it home to a 13th place finish to end the night and close out the racing weekend.

“This past weekend was honestly a positive weekend for us,” stated Covington. “On Friday we had a good pill draw that set us up well for the feature. We were able to cap it off with a third place finish. I honestly think if I wouldn’t have made those couple mistakes we would of had a shot at the win. Then on Saturday night we were fast all night long. In the heat I had the position for the lead twice and got the door shut on me pretty hard. Being on the national tour and points racing I didn’t push the issue and just settled for feature lock in starting spot. We were fast in the main and we just got into an accident early that was not in our control and unfortunate. The first accident got us in the back and in a positon to be caught up in another crash late in the race also. But to be honest, the car was good both nights and happy with progress we have made. We will head to South Dakota this weekend and see if we can’t win it or get another solid top five.”
