Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (July 15, 2014) – Trey Starks nearly captured a pair of podium finishes last weekend during the Summer Thunder Sprint Series doubleheader at Grays Harbor Raceway.
Starks kicked off the event on Friday by qualifying fifth quickest and charging from third to win his heat race. That locked him into the feature redraw as one of the top-six qualifiers who advanced through their heat race.
After pulling the No. 3 in the redraw to line up on the inside of the second row of the main event, Starks went to battle for a victory.
“We ran second for about the first half of the race,” he said. “I got shuffled back a little bit trying to race with lapped cars. Finally on a green-white-checkered restart we had a slider-fest for third and we ended up coming out on top.”
Following his third-place result, Starks returned to the 3/8-mile oval on Saturday.
He qualified second quickest and placed fourth in his heat race to once again advance into the feature redraw. This time he drew the highest number – six – to line up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“We got by a few guys toward the first part of the race,” he said. “On a restart about halfway through me and (Travis) Rilat were sliding each other back and forth. The way the track was it was prone to a lot of sliders. It was good, hard, clean racing and that was how you had to get by a guy. It was probably some of the most fun I’ve had.”
Starks was running third with approximately 10 laps remaining when the unthinkable happened during a caution.
“I went to spin the tires under caution and blew a right rear tire,” he said. “The header was cracked on the right side so it was pulling air through, which was making a big flame come out the muffler so it burned the tire off.”
After his team changed the tire, Starks restarted at the back of the field and he maneuvered to an 11th-place result in the closing laps.
He is slated to take this weekend off before tackling the Bob’s Burger & Brew Summer Nationals at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., July 25-26.
