After a solid top ten performance at the big half mile of Dodge County Speedway on Friday, the STM team changed race plans on Saturday due to a rain out at Rice Lake Speedway and headed over the St. Croix Valley Raceway for the 3rd Annual Open Wheel Nationals. Young Scotty Thiel led all 25 laps of the Main and captured his second Open Wheel Nationals title!
Friday night brought some great racing action at the Dodge County Speedway in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Scotty went out for qualifying and put down a 17.482 lap time which was good enough for 8th quick out of the 27 cars signed in. Thiel would start out the eight lap heat race in the fourth spot and struggled early on but finally got a momentum going and captured the third spot with only one lap to go. After crossing the line in the third spot it would set him to start in the tenth spot for the 23 lap A-main event which was in memory of the late Rick Schmidt.
The field went green for the 23 lap A-main event. Scotty stormed down to the bottom side of turn one and managed to gain several spot but struggled getting off of turn two and lost all he had gained. One lap was complete and Thiel was back into the tenth spot where he had started. He began to find the groove and moved forward a couple spots before a yellow flag flew. After returning back to green flag action, Scotty battled for the seventh place position. With only five laps to go, Thiel narrowed the full straight-a-way gap on sixth but was unable to make the pass for position during the battle through lap traffic. After 23 laps were complete, Thiel found himself in the seventh position.
“It was an alright night for our team. We finished at least which was a big step since the last few runs with the IRA we haven’t done well. We had a great car towards the end. I just messed up in the beginning. We’ll take it and hopefully use it as a confidence boost for tomorrow” Thiel stated after the main event.
The team drove for a few hours north as Saturday night was originally scheduled for Rice Lake Speedway. The team stayed and did maintenance about one hour away from the track. Around 11 o’clock on Saturday morning the folks at Rice Lake decided to cancel the event due to potential weather that was on the way. Scotty and the crew made a phone call to the St. Croix Valley Raceway track where the Open Wheel Nationals were taking place and they said the show was on for Saturday night. After pulling down the 360 car, they prepared to get ready for the 3rd Annual Open Wheel Nationals and defend the title!
Sunny skies and 80 degree weather started out the night at St. Croix Valley Raceway. Scotty picked a 40 pill which set him to start fourth in his heat race event. A fast and tacky track was presented in the heat race. Scotty struggled all race to get through traffic and ended up settling for a fourth place finish. The invert for the UMSS Challenge race set Scotty to start on the outside front row. The field took the green flag and Scotty never looked back. He worked the high groove for all ten laps and checked out from the field. With that finish and the invert being a zero pill, it set him to start on the outside front row of the 25 lap Open Wheel Nationals A-main event. The crew prepared and worked hard to give Scotty a car that drove perfect like it did in the challenge race.
The field got set into position and prepared to take the green flag. Scotty stormed out to the high side right away and captured the lead. A quick caution came out for a car spinning and called for a complete restart. After taking the green flag once more, Scotty didn’t hesitate again and took the lead coming out of turn two. He pulled away from the field and began to catch lap traffic in only four laps. Thiel worked his way around lap traffic and continued to pull away from the other lead cars. 22 laps of green flag action took place and Scotty had a commanding lead when a caution came out for another car spinning in turn four. This bunched the field back up and gave way to a green, white, checkered finish. After returning to green flag action, Scotty did not give an inch and stormed back up to the top side of the track. He launched off of turn two and set the way out front. He took the white flag and continued his momentum for the final lap and would come out of turn four to capture his back to back Open Wheel Nationals victory and the first win of the 2014 season!
“Wohoo! This one feels great! I knew we had a good shot after starting up front like that. Last year we struggled early on but came alive at the end and grabbed the win. This year we checked out and never looked back. I knew that late restart would close things up be we managed to hold on it. It feels good to finally get the first win of the season out of the way. My crew gave me an amazing car tonight. I could put it anywhere and it went. We needed this win after the up and down year we are having so far.” Stated an excited Scotty Thiel after the race.
Next up on the STM schedule is this coming weekend July 19th at the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI and July 20th at the Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI.
