(Bill W) July 11, 2014 – Terry McCarl registered his second win of the year with the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders and the ninth in his career on Friday night at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, Iowa. The Altoona, Iowa driver tangled with leader Wayne Johnson on a restart, assuming the lead and claiming the victory aboard Jimmy Davies #99.
Johnson led the field early from his pole position early over Josh Schneiderman and point leader, Jon Agan. McCarl pounced on the leaders early. He shot from eighth to get by Agan for third on lap three, and then passed Schneiderman for second a lap later. On lap five, Sawyer Phillips spun bringing the first of four cautions in the 25-lap event.
Johnson would lead McCarl, Schneiderman, Cole Wood and Agan back to green. Wood surged under Schneiderman on lap six, with Agan in two to take third. A Chris Martin spin on lap nine slowed things again. On the restart, contact was made between McCarl and Johnson, sending the leader spinning.
“I about flipped it,” said McCarl. “I had such a good run on (Johnson) on the restart. Jimmy and Scott Bonar had the car so good. I just got in a little too hot, and he went lower than he had been going. I just ran into him and about flipped the thing. I apologize to Wayne for that.”
While McCarl would distance himself from the pack, Agan slid by Wood for second on lap eleven. A tough night for Tony Shilling continued when he spun with twelve laps in the books. Wood would return the favor on Agan on lap 16 as rubber developed on the lower part of the ¼-mile, but Agan would gain it back on a restart for a Jarrod Schneiderman spin with four laps to go.
McCarl would be followed to the stripe by Agan, Wood, Bret Tripplett and CJ Houseman. Mike Houseman Jr., Josh Schneiderman, Paul Nienhiser, hard-charger Dustin Selvage and Bobby Mincer rounded out the top ten. Mike Houseman Jr., Johnson and Jarrod Schneiderman won heats, while Danile Bergquist held off a surging Selvage by a few feet in an exciting B main.
It was McCarl’s first ever appearance in Tipton and it marked the 62nd track he has won on in his storied career. “We had such a great run,” he said in Victory Lane. “We started eighth and we were able to get right up through there. I can’t thank Jimmy and these guys enough. It’s the first time we’ve raced here. I came with Carson (McCarl) a couple of years ago.”
“The track changed a lot,” said Agan. “Honestly, we weren’t very good most of the night. We were free all night long. We don’t run the small tracks like this very much, and we are still working on it. We got better for sure, but we tried to keep the tires underneath us. We lost a spot and got it back, lost a spot and got it back. In the big picture, we’re happy with it. I wish we’d have been a little tighter. We may have had something for Terry. Last year, we were torn up here in someone else’s accident, so we’re happy with it.”
“We were running fourth and got a lucky break with Terry and Wayne,” said the third place Wood. “We moved up into third. We were able to pass Agan on the bottom. He got back by us on the restart, which was my fault. I was focused on trying to get by Terry. I got in too hot, and Agan was able to get by us. Coming to this track, it was tough. There was a thin top and a thin bottom. We’re happy to come out with a third.”
The Sprint Invaders return to action for the Sprint Invaders Nationals, August 15, 16 and 17 when they visit the Bloomfield (IA) Speedway, 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa and Quincy (IL) Raceways. For more information, visit www.SprintInvaders.com!
