Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (July 9, 2014) After another rain out at Knoxville on Saturday, it was a sixth place finish after leading most of the race for Matt Covington and the Covington Motorsports team at Husets Speedway Sunday night.
Covington was able to draw a low pill at the draw table to grab a front row starting spot for the heat race. With never racing Husets before, Covington would have to get acclimated fast with only a handful of hot laps. Once the green flagged waived in the heat, Matt set sail out front and never looked back grabbing the heat race win.
With the Heat race win Matt would be granted the third starting spot for the feature.
With the feature underway, Matt would immediately work into second and try his best to run down the leader. After only a handful of laps Covington was able to catch the leader and drive by to take the lead. As the two raced around a few lap cars, Covington could hear the second place car staying right with him. With the track started going away on the bottom and pressure from the second place car, Matt decided to jump on the top and find the only place the moisture was left. Covington’s first place effort would come to a halt when a slight mistake on corner exit found the Triple X/Wesmar powered machine tagging the fence and losing the right rear tire. After a quick stop in the work area, Matt was able to rejoin the field and work back up to 6th by feature’s end to close out the night.
“Sunday was a tough one for me,” stated Covington. “After the up and down year we have had, to not get the win after leading is major bummer. To be honest, I just made a mistake on the top. Husets is a fast and tricky place. I have never been to that track before and when you running the top you have to be careful on corner exit to peel off a little early or it will get you. I had many of the locals come by and tell me it happens all the time and has even happened to them, but still doesn’t make me feel any better after letting that one slip away. But we were fast and I believe we should be good up here for the upcoming ASCS National races. I have to thank the crew and Justin for working hard and never getting down. We will just stay positive and see if we can’t pick up some podium finishes during the next couple weekends of racing.”
Matt and his Covington Motorsports team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, Bob Hurley RV, Eaton Industrial, Maxwell Oil, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2014.
