Inside Line Promotions – DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 7, 2014) – Big Game Motorsports driver Sammy Swindell had found a rhythm since introducing a new car into his fleet approximately two weeks ago.
“It was rolling along there pretty good,” he said. “It seemed to make quite a big difference and helped out a lot of things. We were right up there most of the nights.”
Swindell was in contention to win a pair of World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series events last week before disaster struck and destroyed the effective sprint car on the opening lap of the Boothill Showdown last Friday at Dodge City Raceway Park.
After qualifying eighth quickest, winning his heat race and claiming the dash, Swindell started the main event on the pole.
“I was ahead on the start,” he said. “They had reworked the track and it was pretty greasy on the bottom. I didn’t go in right on the bottom. Another driver got in the grease and slid right up into me. It destroyed our car and finished that night off.”
Contact between the top two in turns one and two sent the Big Game Treestands car into a series of wild flips. The impact ruined the race car and Swindell was credited with a 24th-place result.
The Big Game Treestands team was forced to use a backup car – one it had struggled with this season – for Saturday’s finale at Dodge City Raceway Park.
“We tried to run the same setup that we’ve run on the car the last few nights,” Swindell said. “It wasn’t right. We tried to make some adjustments, but we struggled with some things that we’d struggled with the last month. The race track didn’t leave any opportunity to do much either.”
Swindell qualified 18th quickest, advanced from sixth to third place in his heat race and finished 15th in the main event after the track took rubber early.
“We had to start back so far,” he said. “It was around the bottom and rubbered up. You could only pass people when they made a mistake.”
That capped a week that started off on a promising note last Wednesday at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., where Swindell qualified ninth quickest and was victorious in his heat race and the dash to start the main event on the pole.
The Big Game Treestands team led the first 18 laps before contact hurt the handling of the sprint car around the midpoint of the feature.
“You needed to run on the bottom when there wasn’t any traffic in turns one and two,” Swindell said. “I got hit from behind. It definitely messed the car up. It was vibrating really bad and wasn’t near as good as it was before.”
Swindell maintained the runner-up position for several laps before fading in traffic to post a fourth-place result, which marked his 10th top five of the season.
He is hoping to have a new car built for this week’s World of Outlaws events – the 26th annual Brad Doty Classic on Wednesday at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, and the 31st annual Kings Royal on Friday and Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio.
