Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 4, 2014) – Daryn Pittman picked off his second consecutive victory atop Dodge City Raceway Park clay by wiring the field in Friday night’s 30-lap feature that wrapped up the opening night of the Boothill Showdown atop the 3/8-mile oval.
The reigning series champion from Owasso, OK, who topped last year’s Boothill Showdown finale took quick advantage of an opening lap incident that sidelined Sammy Swindell and then led all the way in the non-stop affair for his eighth win of the year aboard the Kasey Kahne Racing Great Clips No. 9 Ti22-chassis.
“Sammy was gonna be tough to get around, I probably owe Paul (McMahan) a few beers after that one,” Pittman quipped from victory lane.
While Pittman took World of Outlaws Sprint Car honors, Scott Wilson held off Troy Ullery and Mike Trent to take victory laurels in the accompanying 1200-cc Lightning Sprint Main event.
With the evening’s 27-car WoO field whittled down to 24 for the main event, Dash winner Sammy Swindell and Paul McMahan led the way to the green flag. Swindell slid into the lead with McMahan ducking underneath in turn two only to make contact, with Swindell going for a wild flip that ended his night.
After Swindell expressed his displeasure with McMahan, Pittman moved up to the pole position, gunned into the lead at the drop of the green flag and had the field covered throughout.
McMahan and Australian Kerry Madsen gave chase throughout but were never able to seriously contend for the win.
“I can’t say enough about this team, we’ve struggled a little bit here lately but we know we’re better than that and tonight kind of showed that,” Pittman explained in victory lane.
McMahan settled for runner-up honors in front of Madsen with Joey Saldana crossing the stripe fourth after setting quick time in qualifying for the 16th time of the season earlier in the evening.
Jason Sides, a runner-up finisher in last year’s Boothill Showdown opener, posted his first top-five finish since Las Vegas on March 6.
Sam Hafertepe, Jr., was sixth, with current World of Outlaws points leader Donny Schatz seventh after winning the opening portion of last year’s Boothill Showdown. Cody Darrah was eighth, with Brad Sweet and Logan Schuchart completing the top ten.
McMahan, Swindell and Pittman topped heat race action after Saldana established a fast time of 12.659 seconds with New Mexico’s Josh Hodges racing to a convincing victory in the “B” Main.
In the 20-lap Lightning Sprint feature, Colorado’s Scott Wilson took the lead from Luke McGee on the fourth round then held off the late charges of fellow Coloradoan Troy Ullery and Missouri’s Mike Trent to post the win with Winnipeg’s Roland Bernard and Minnesota’s Dexter Duergsten in the top five.
The World of Outlaws Boothill Showdown continues on Saturday night with racing action going green at 7:30 p.m. Lightning Sprints and Vintage Cars will be on the card as well.
