Scotty Thiel – Better Late than Never!

Scotty Thiel – Better Late than Never!

Last minute calls this past week made for an eventful weekend for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team. Friday night racing took place at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway were Scotty drove from 14th to 4th followed by Saturday evening making a last minute call to run with the World of Outlaws and drove from 24th to 15th!

The team made a last minute call on Thursday afternoon to throw in their MSA 360 motor to race Friday night at the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway since the 410 engine was not going to be back in time for the weekend with the outlaws. Scotty drew a two (2) pill which set him to start on the front row of the heat race event. Mechanical issues caused the team to miss hot laps and the heat race event as they scrambled to fix the inboard brake issue that occurred. With plenty of years of experience on the Manitowoc track, the team adjusted the car to previous notes of a slick track condition. Scotty started out in the 14th position for the nights 25 lap A-main event.

Green flag action took place and the field charged into turns one and two. Scotty struggled getting into a groove since he was in the back of the field but after a couple laps he settled in and began to make the charge forward. He had to work both the top and bottom side of the track as slower traffic was presented in both grooves and made for a difficult time to get into a rhythm. With 20 laps completed and green flag action still underway, Thiel found himself all the way up in the fourth position. He was gaining ground on third but with three laps to go the car began to slow down. Scotty checked the gauges which were good and held on to the fourth spot for the remaining laps.
“Little disappointed that something happened there at the end. The car was on rails out there and the fastest one out there. Needed a caution just to get bunched back up but we still were charging. It was fun at least, hope the fans liked it!” Thiel stated after the race.

Saturday night the World of Outlaws came to town at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI. The team did not have the 410 back and planned on just going down to watch the show. After a day of golfing and relaxing, Scotty made a phone call at 5 o’clock PM to his pit guy who was already down at Beaver Dam to ask how many cars were signed in for the nights World of Outlaw Action. The response caught Scotty off guard as there were only 24 cars signed in. After a quick decision of whether or not go load up the ASCS 360 car, Scotty hustled to the race shop and loaded up the car. World of Outlaw officials confirmed that Scotty could tag the end of the qualifying order. After pulling into to the pits right at 7:00PM, the crew began to get the car prepared.

Being under powered really showed in Qualifying but no matter what, everyone was locked into the nights 40 lap A-main event. Scotty started in the eighth position of the heat race event and would battle for the seventh spot at the end but came up short, giving him a 24th place starting position for the A-main event. The track began to get slick as the night went on which only was in Scotty’s advantage by having less horsepower than the rest of the field. The 10 minute horn went off which signals the teams to get the cars finished up and pushed out on to the race track.

The field got pushed off and began to work their way into the starting order. Scotty knew that it would be very difficult to move forward with the outlaws but hoped for the best. As the green flag flew, the field charged into turns one and two. Scotty worked the low line early on and moved up several spots right away. The race went on for 15 laps of green flag action before the first yellow came out. Scotty was moved up into the 18th spot at that point and felt comfortable in the car to move up even more. After returning to green flag action, he continued to work the low line of the track and did in fact move up a couple more spots. A red flag came out shortly after which set up the field for another restart. Thiel was able to get an incredible restart and slid up close to the top ten going into turn one. The high side momentum sent a few cars back by Thiel but he maintained his ground on the field. The car began to fade away towards the end but after 40 laps of green flag action, Scotty drove the #64 up to the 15th position.

“Wow, I cannot believe it. After making a super last minute decision to come here, we made it out in time and didn’t do too bad with only having the 360 in. I don’t think many people knew that but this team worked hard and we did it. I can’t complain with that performance. I’m sure I could have pushed it harder and tried to use the cushion after that one really good restart but I just didn’t want to get in the way of the leaders. Held the lead lap til only 5 to go which I didn’t think was going to happen. Overall, I’m happy and glad we came here!”

Next up on the STM schedule was originally Huset’s Speedway Wednesday July 2nd, but due to not having the 410 back, the team decided to just focus on preparing the 360 for Thursday July 3rd at Jackson Speedway in Jackson, MN for the Spring Nationals make up event which pays $10,000 to the winner!
