Covington Comes Up One Spot Short At 81 Speedway

Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (July 1, 2014) It was a second place finish for Matt Covington and the Covington Motorsports team at 81 Speedway Sunday night.

After earlier plans to race Knoxville on Saturday where scrubbed due to rain, Matt and the team decided to go to the NCRA/ASCS Sooner race in Wichita on Sunday and try a few things out with the car and motor.

Covington was able to draw a low pill at the draw table to grab a front row starting spot for the heat race. When the green flag waived, Matt set sail out front and never looked back grabbing the heat race win.

The heat win set Covington up with the third place starting spot for the feature.

Once the green flag waved and the feature got underway, Matt would immediately work into second and try his best to run down the leader. Covington was able to catch the leader in lap traffic at the midway point of the race. As the two raced around a few lap cars, Covington was able to pull alongside the leader but the caution light would come on. Once the race got back underway Matt would try to run down the leader again, but ultimately have to settle for the runner up spot as the feature came to a close.

“It was a good night for us” stated Covington. “Anytime your that close you want to win, but to end up second and not tear anything up is always a good night. We came up here to try a few things with the fuel and motor. We have been having a little trouble with restarts and fighting a stumble when we go to take off. I was able to catch the leader in lap traffic and pull alongside him before the caution, but to be honest once we went green again I lost a lot of distant when the motor stumbled on the start. Is what it is, and we will just keep working at it and see if we can’t correct it. I think we might go down to Knoxville this weekend and knock off the rust there for the upcoming Nationals.”

Matt and his Covington Motorsports team would like to thank T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, Bob Hurley RV, Eaton Industrial, Maxwell Oil, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2014.
