Inside Line Promotions – HAUBSTADT, Ind. (July 1, 2014) – Tyler Thomas captured his 10th top five of the season last Saturday at Tri-State Speedway.

“I had no worse than a second-place car,” he said. “I just made a mistake in lapped traffic and bent a shock. It hurt us there and we lost a couple of spots.”

After getting caught up in an early crash in his heat race, Thomas maneuvered from the last row to a second-place result. That lined him up on the inside of the second row for the 30-lap POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series main event.

“We had a long green flag run,” he said. “It’s hard to say if I could have caught (the leader) in traffic. The lapped cars were running two and three wide. I couldn’t figure out a way around one of them. He slowed down a lot getting into turn three and I got into back of him and it bent the right front shock. It locked down in place so it was carrying down the straightaway and it bounced through the corners. I was basically hanging on the rest of the race.”

The contact midway through the feature hampered the handling of his midget as Thomas held on for a fifth-place finish.

He is slated to compete this Saturday and Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., for the Pepsi Nationals. The event is tri-sanctioned by the Honda USAC National Midget Series, the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and the Badger Midget Auto Racing Association.

“I’m really excited to go back there,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite midget tracks. As the year has gone on we’ve made a lot of changes on the car. I know we can be competitive. The biggest thing for us is qualifying. Hopefully we can turn that around. The Pepsi Nationals would be a cool race to get a win at.”

Thomas recorded a pair of top-four results in May during his most recent trip to the track.
