Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (June 27, 2014) – It’s about time for an all-Sprint Car double dip in southwest Kansas as the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park hosts the Sixth Annual Steve King Memorial tomorrow (Saturday) night.
It will be a Kansas vs. Oklahoma showdown of sorts as the Kansas-based NCRA Sprint Car Series squares off with the ASCS Sooner Region in a $2,000-to-win tilt with the URSS Sprint Cars taking to the DCRP clay for the second time of the year as well.
Saturday’s Steve King Memorial marks the first appearance for both NCRA and ASCS at the Doge City Raceway Park since 2012 when Logan Forler topped an NCRA card and Jeff Swindell swept a pair of ASCS National nights.
A Michigan transplant now calling Wichita home, Jeremy Campbell leads the NCRA forces into the event with a 30-point edge over Quinter’s C.J. Johnson. Wichita’s J.D. Johnson, Norman, Oklahoma’s Danny Wood and Salina’s Jon Freeman round out the NCRA top five.
Tulsa’s Dustin Morgan leads the ASCS Sooner Regional forces into Saturday’s clash with a 167-point advantage over Broken Arrow’s Alex Sewell. Broken Arrow’s Mike Goodman is ranked third with Lindsay’s Harli White and Tulsa’s Sean McClelland in the top five.
The NCRA ranks have featured four winners in five events. While reigning Steve King Memorial champion Jack Dover has doubled up, single wins have gone to Jeff Stasa, Danny Wood and Kevin Swindell.
McClelland is the only driver among the top ten in ASCS Sooner points to score a victory through nine events thus far in 2014. Also picking up Sooner wins and expected for Saturday’s action are Washington’s Seth Bergman and Liberal, KS, native Tony Bruce, Jr., who earned one of his first career Sprint Car feature wins at DCRP on July 23, 2006.
While the NCRA and ASCS forces clash, the United Rebel Sprint Series will be battle it out in intense fashion as well atop what is familiar territory for them.
Fifteen-year-old Zac Taylor of Green River, WY, ranks as the latest in a stretch of ten different winners in as many URSS feature events at DCRP dating back to 2009. Taylor picked up the win on May 10 when apparent victor Brian Herbert weighed in light at the scales. It marked the second consecutive time the apparent winner crossed the scales too light, with Zach Blurton picking up the Jerry Soderberg Memorial victory last September after Taylor Velasquez weighed in below the minimum.
In addition to Blurton, 2013 URSS winners at DCRP were Velasquez, J.D. Johnson and Brian Herbert. Current URSS points leader Jake Bubak and Mike Peters posted 2012 wins, Jason Martin and Jeff Radcliffe were victorious in 2011 and C.J. Johnson began the stretch of ten winners in a row in 2009.
Bubak is 40 points ahead of Taylor in URSS National points and just two points ahead of Blurton in URSS Kansas Region points.
Tickets for Saturday’s Sixth Annual Steve King Memorial featuring NCRA vs. ASCS Sooner Region Sprint Cars along with URSS Sprint Cars are just $20 with children 11 and under free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes are $30.
