NEW CASTLE, Ind.—June 26, 2014— Tracy Hines came pretty close to winning at Memphis International Raceway, then known as Memphis Motorsports Park, in 2000 with the Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series. He also nearly won in his most recent pavement Silver Crown race at Gateway Motorsports Park on June 14. He has his sights on earning his first Memphis win and first Silver Crown victory of the season this weekend as the series returns to the three-quarters-mile paved oval for the first time in nine years.
The Memphis 100 for Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series at Memphis International Raceway is set for Sunday, June 29. Practice will precede time trials, which will set the starting grid for the 100-lap contest.
“Our pavement program is really strong right now,” said Hines, who drives the Hughs Brothers/Midwest Sheet Metal Beast for Lightfoot Racing. “Another lap or two and we probably would have won at Gateway (Motorsports Park). To be in contention race in and race out is all you can ask for and that's where we are right now. We have a great engine combo and the car is handling phenomenally.”
Hines has made six career starts at Memphis International Raceway, located in Millington, Tennessee, including racing in all four of the Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series events. He has three Silver Crown top-10 at Memphis, highlighted by a runner-up finish in 2000. Hines also has competed in a pair of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at the track, finishing 14th and 16th. The veteran driver made his Memphis debut in 1998 with the Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series and most recently raced at the venue in 2005.
“It’s been quite a few years since we've been there, but I would imagine the track surface is still pretty close to what we remember last time we were there,” Hines said. “Having raced in a few longer races with the Truck Series there, should come in hand this weekend, as it will seem like more of a sprint race to be honest. Hopefully the fans come out and support the show. It's a great facility they have and there is such a rich racing heritage in that area.”
In four Silver Crown starts in 2014, Hines has finished fourth or better in each and every one. In his most recent start at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois, the 2000 series champion came home second. His other pavement Silver Crown start this season came at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in May, at which time he finished fourth. On the dirt this season with the Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series, Hines finished second at the Terre Haute Action Track and fourth at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. He is currently tied for the series point lead with Kody Swanson, as he chases his second series championship.
Last weekend, Hines competed in a pair of races with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series in the Upper Midwest. He finished eighth at Angell Park Speedway in Wisconsin, and was 10th at Deer Creek Speedway in Minnesota. A third scheduled race at Amsoil Speedway in Superior, Wisconsin was cancelled due to inclement weather.
