(Bill W) June 25, 2014 – The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team will be pulling double duty this Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. It’s the week for 360 Twin Features, and they’re hoping to get some laps in preparation for August’s 360 Nationals, which Wayne has won twice. He will also be running with the World of Outlaws on Friday at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.
Last week saw the team run a trio of races in Oklahoma as part of the Bob Westphal Memorial ASCS Speedweek. Things started last Wednesday night at Lawton Speedway where Wayne has seen some recent success. After running second in his heat, he would line up twelfth for the feature. “It was weird, because we’d won the last two races that we’d run at Lawton,” he says. “We put in the same setup, but we were way too free. The racetracks were similar too. These tires make these cars way freer.”
Wayne would work his way forward, finishing ninth. “We were way too free until the rubber started getting laid,” he says. “We’ve always been too tight, so we were experimenting a little bit.”
The series moved to Creek County Speedway near Sapulpa on Friday. Wayne would run fourth in the heat after starting fifth.. “The racetrack just wasn’t good at Creek County,” he says. “It had way too much water in it. We weren’t able to pass in the heat, and we had to go through the B.”
Starting in row ten, Wayne made a few laps before pulling in. “I just pulled it in after a while,” he says. “It was so heavy. I did get some cars passed right off the bat. The car was good, but there wasn’t any sense in me tearing up a car for that. We didn’t have much to gain.”
At Outlaw Motor Speedway near Wainwright, Wayne finished second in the heat, before lining up ninth for the main event. “We were pretty good there at first,” he says. “It’s just so hard to pass right now with everything the way it is. I got to racing with a lapped car. I went to slide him, and I kind of overdid it. I went too hard, and ended up crashing. I got over the cushion, and into the fence and ended up upside down.”
The team has things back together for this weekend. “We’re going to run both classes Saturday night (at Knoxville),” says Wayne. “That will give us a couple of features with our 360 that we’ll need for August. We’ll be running with the Outlaws too on Friday night at West Burlington. Depending how everything goes, we may go to Cedar Lake with the Outlaws on Sunday.”
