Inside Line Promotions – BAYTOWN, Texas (June 25, 2014) – After nearly falling off his car during a wing dance earlier this season, Channin Tankersley toned it down following his victory last weekend.

“I had the car covered in baby oil and the wing in the trunk,” he said. “It’s probably not a good idea to fall off your car in front of all those people. So I did some doughnuts and did the fence climb.”

Tankersley is still pumped up following his second triumph of the season and his first ASCS Gulf South Region win on Saturday at Royal Purple Raceway. It also extended his lead in the championship standings to 85 points with 10 races remaining.

“Every week our goal is to win,” he said. “Realistically it’s unlikely that you’re going to win every week, but we still go out there with that mindset. Ultimately I think that’s how you win championships.”

Tankersley kicked off the night by charging from fourth to claim his heat race, which earned him enough points to advance into the feature redraw.

“We got up to second on the first corner and got the lead the next lap,” he said of his heat race. “I was on cruise control from there. At that track once you’ve got clear air it’s hard to get passed.”

Tankersley then pulled the No. 1 in the random redraw to start the main event from the pole position.

“The car kind of stumbled, but I got a good enough jump where I could go down there and slide Morgan (Turpen) in the first corner,” he said. “I would say within five to seven laps we were in traffic. I was about three quarters of the way through and I got into some real heavy traffic.”

Despite being slowed in traffic a couple of times, Tankersley maintained the lead as he cruised to the victory.

“Definitely the win gives us a lot of momentum,” he said. “Hopefully we can get our stride back. That win is a big confidence booster.”

Tankersley also finished strong last Friday at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, where he got off to a rough start to the ASCS Gulf South event.

“Friday night I put myself in a bad situation in the heat race,” he said. “I got tangled with another car and bent the front end.”

After finishing fifth in his heat race, Tankersley lined up on the inside of the eighth row for the main event.

“I was kind of mad at myself,” he said. “I was on a mission. I got through the pack decently quick. I got up to the top five by halfway. We had a yellow with about six laps to go. I don’t know if I sealed the tires up or what, but the car plateaued.”

Tankersley ended the event with a fourth-place finish.

“It felt pretty good,” he said. “All in all, to go through something like that and still put a gap in our points lead is a big bonus.”

He is scheduled to take this weekend off before returning to action during an ASCS Gulf South Region tripleheader July 3 at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas; July 4 at Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad, Texas; and July 5 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas.
