Strong Showing For Covington During Speedweek

Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (June 24, 2014) It was a solid week for Matt Covington during the ASCS National Bob Westphal Memorial Cup Speedweek. After a rough start to speedweeks at Devils that ended with a DNF, Covington rebounded with a 6th, 5th, 10th, and 4th place finishes to close out the rest of the week.

Matt and the crew started off speedweeks at Devils Bowl Speedway. The night would end with DNF after Matt hoped the cushion and hit the wall with the rear of the car halfway through the night's A-main.

After a few days off, Covington and the ASCS National Tour headed to Lawton Speedway on Wednesday night. A good draw and heat race win propelled Matt to a strong 6th place finish in the nights A-main.

On Thursday the next stop for Matt and the team would be Creek County Speedway. Covington would race from 8th to 4th in the heat and earn a spot in the redraw. The redraw unfortunately was not too kind to Covington as he drew the 8th starting position. Matt was able to drive from the 8th starting spot to end up 5th in the nights feature..

Friday night would have Covington and crew headed to Outlaw Motorsports Park in Oklahoma. With another deep pill draw, Matt would find himself in the back of a tuff heat. After finishing 6th in the heat Covington would have to run the B-main. With a 4th place finish in the B-main, Matt would transfer into the main but would have to start from the back. Matt would race from the 20th starting spot to end up 10th when the checkers fell and salvage another top-10 for the third night in row.

The final night of the 2014 speedweeks would be held at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Missouri. Covington’s luck at the draw table would not change after drawing one of the highest pills once again. This time the deep starting spot in the heat would play into Matt’s hand, as he rallied to gain the needed passing points with a 3rd place finish. The result would be the pole starting position in the redraw. Once the race got underway, Matt would jump out front and lead over a dozen laps before surrendering the lead. Matt would continue to battle the rest of the race with the leaders and dice back and fourth in the top-5, before ultimately coming home in the 4th position to close out the final night of speedweeks.

“Overall it was a very solid speedweek for us,” stated Covington. “It didn’t start off the way we wanted in Dallas and we got ourselves in a big hole. We came home those next few days and got down a new car for Lawton. Not sure if it was the new car or couple setup changes, but after that we never finished outside the top-ten and to be honest could have won at Lucas if we made a small setup change. We were good in one end of the track, but were lacking a little forward bite down in the other end. Almost all week we had very high pill draws. Couple nights it helped us, and a couple nights it hurt us. But we ended up 6th in total speedweek points and without the DNF in Dallas I am pretty sure we could have been somewhere in the top two or three. I also have to say it was nice and refreshing to race close to home a few nights and be able to see a lot of my fans, friends, and family. Hopefully we can keep going in a positive direction and gain some more momentum as we race into the heat of the summer.”
