Scotty Thiel – Motor Issues Overwhelm at Oshkosh

Mother Nature opened up early but the track crew at the Oshkosh Speedzone did in fact get the track prepared and racing took place on Friday, June 20th. Scotty qualified in the 13th position and would dominate in the heat race event to capture his second heat race win of the IRA rookie season but would struggle in the A-main due to a sour motor half way through.

Scotty drew a 67 pill which placed him to be the last car out for the Osborn & Sons IRA Qualifying order. After laying down a 13.279 lap time, it placed him to be 13th quick for the night. That was good enough to place him to start on the outside front row of the night’s heat race event. The track started to become very tacky as the night went on which led for a fast heat race. The field came out of turn four and took the green flag. Thiel stormed on the high side in turn one and captured the lead going down the back stretch. He pulled away from the field by a full corner lead and after ten laps of full throttle action, he would cross the line for his second career IRA heat race victory.

With the invert draw, Scotty would start in the eighth spot for the night’s 30 lap Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car A-main event. A tacky track condition was an understatement as a slight mist opened up before the main started. It helped keep moisture down on the track all race long. The field took the green and stormed off into turn one. Scotty tried working the high side early on but lost a little ground and moved to the middle part of the track. He was struggling with a very tight race car which made it difficult to turn in the corners. With ten laps in, Scotty worked his way up to the fifth place position but several laps later, the engine would expire going down the backstretch. He pulled into the infield quick and that would cap off the night. He would end up 17th in the official finish.

“Our night started off really good. Qualifying last isn’t the best but we managed to be good enough to start on the front row. Felt good to win that heat and I thought we were going to be set up good for the feature. We were way too tight early on, I’m not sure if it would have gotten better or not. I was having some break issues so that didn’t help the car out one bit. I’m not sure what happened to the motor. It just lost power going down the backstretch. We’ll get it pulled out tonight yet and get it fixed. Until then, we will have to rely on the ASCS car tomorrow night at Wilmot” stated a disappointed Thiel after the event.

Saturday evening brought the team back to the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin. The team pulled into the pit line but the weather rolled in and cancelled the event.

The next stop on the STM schedule is tentatively this weekend at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI, along with Sunday event at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI, both with the World of Outlaws. The team is hoping to have the engine back in time to run both of these events.
