Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 23, 2014) – Trey Starks picked up his 10th top 10 of the season last Saturday at Skagit Speedway during the finale tune-up for this weekend’s 43rd annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup.
“Everything was pretty bad until the main and then stuff that wouldn’t come close to working on any other car we’ve driven worked really well with this car,” he said. “I was really comfortable with the car in the main.”
After qualifying 10th quickest in only his second race piloting a J&J Chassis, Starks advanced from fifth to fourth place in his heat race. That started him on the inside of the fifth row for the 25-lap feature.
“The track was weird,” he said. “It was really slick for Skagit. We were really free early. We got it really rolling in the main. I ended up yarding the wing all the way back. There was a big curb and there was a bottom and we could roll the middle.”
Starks maneuvered into fourth place by the midpoint of the race.
“I was passing for third on a restart and the nose wing fell down,” he said. “It was so tight I had to get my wing all the way forward, which took me a lap or two. We dropped way back to ninth in a lap. We fought our way back up to sixth.”
Starks rallied to end with the sixth-place result to give him two top 10s in as many races at Skagit Speedway this season.
This weekend brings the famed Dirt Cup Thursday through Saturday at the 3/10-mile oval.
“We need to qualify good at Dirt Cup because that’s so many points,” he said. “I feel like we’re kinda owed one. It seems like Dirt Cup hasn’t been nice to us. Skagit is all about starting toward the front because dirty air is tough there. If we have a good starting spot I think we have all of the capabilities to win it.”
