Finally, after three consecutive attempts to go racing in the last two weeks, the Scott Thiel Motorsports team was able to race Saturday night at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wisconsin. This was the sixth event of the IRA series and the worst finish for the team so far this year after having all top ten finishes in the first five events. After struggling early to fix a engine issue, Scotty was able to make the A-main event but ended up in the 17th spot.
Scotty completed his hot lap session early in the night and noticed something sounded different when pulling into the pits. He shut the car off right away and told the team to get the hood off right away. After pulling the valve cover off, they discovered a broken rocker arm. Luckily, the team was able to get it fixed, but Scotty would only be given one qualifying lap due to missing his spot in the lineup order. A 12.712 lap time was set by Thiel which would place him 20th quick for the night.
Thiel started out the heat race in the seventh spot. After taking the green flag, he began to charge forward to make it into the top five transfer spots for the nights 30 lap A-main event. In the first two laps, Scotty worked his way up to the fifth spot but would over drive turn three and lose one spot and would not be able to gain the position back. After ten laps of green flag action, Thiel would cross the finish line in the sixth spot, forcing him to come through the B-main event. Scotty started in the sixth spot for the 15 lap B-Main event. He worked himself up to the third spot but would later get penalized for hitting the restart cone. A yellow came out and bumped Scotty back to the fifth spot. After returning back to green flag action, he worked his way back up to the fourth spot and would earn a 19th place starting spot in the nights 30 lap A-main event.
There wasn’t much time after the B before the officials came around to get the A-main cars to staging. The cars were all pushed off on the track and began to get lined up into their positions. Scotty was feeling out the car and noticed that something didn’t feel right when going into the corners. “The car just did not feel that stable” he mentioned after the event, talking about his feeling of the car prior to the green flag. He decided to go ahead and turn some laps regardless. The field took the green flag and Scotty tried to work the top side of the track early on but the car just would not work up there. He moved down to the bottom side of the track and still was not gaining much ground. He moved up a few spots during the course of the main event but after 30 laps of green flag action, Thiel would end up finishing in the 17th position. That would make for the first finish outside of the top ten in IRA action for the team this year. After getting out of the car, Scotty took off the left rear shock to later find out that something caused it not to work properly, thus making the feeling of the car unstable as he mentioned earlier.
“It was a disappointing night for us. We broke the rocker arm after hotlaps and I think that just set us behind the whole night. I messed up in the heat race by dropping out of the transfer spot but luckily we made it out of the B-main. I knew something was up during the main because the car just was not right. I know I struggle at Plymouth a lot but I felt we could have done a lot better than 17th. I pulled that shock off and it only compressed and did not rebound at all. It’s a shame but we will regroup and focus on Oshkosh and Wilmot next weekend.”
Next on tap for STM is this coming Friday at the Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Saturday at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin.
