Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (June 16, 2014) – Although Saturday got off to an ominous start, it ended well for Seth Bergman.

Bergman was caught up in a minor fender bender en route to Devil’s Bowl Speedway for the opening round of the Bob Westphal Memorial Cup Speedweek with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. While it delayed his arrival to the half-mile oval until after the drivers meeting and pill draw, it didn’t slow Bergman once he hit the track.

“The previous times I’ve been there I haven’t been too great,” he said. “I think from everything I’ve learned in the past about that race track, I made some adjustments and they were in the right direction. We were good right out of the box.”

Bergman led from start to finish to capture his heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That earned him enough points to advance into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 1 in the random draw to start the main event on the pole.

“I’ve had good starting spots at Devil’s Bowl before and backed it up,” he said. “I just wanted to make sure I stayed on top of the race track. I knew we were going to have our work cut out for us. I tried to make sure I did everything I could do to put the car in the winner’s circle. It played out for me.”

Bergman got the lead on the initial start and he blasted around the outside groove for the majority of the race.

“I thought the race was going to be around the top so I was set up to run the top,” he said. “I knew I was going to have to get a good start and get in front of Tony (Bruce Jr.). I got the start and was able to switch lanes and get to the top. From there on out I tried to build as much mile per hour and minimize mistakes.”

Despite a handful of cautions, Bergman powered to the victory, which was his first career at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

“Devil’s Bowl is the toughest race track we go to in my opinion,” he said. “Not only do you have to be on top of it driver-wise, but your race car has to be on it. I really believe you’re only as good as your last outing. It gives us some momentum. Getting this win and the wins we’ve had previously are all stepping stones to bigger goals.”

It was Bergman’s first Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour triumph of the season and his third straight year winning a race with the premier 360ci sprint car series. The victory was also Bergman’s sixth of the season, which is only one shy of tying his personal best for a year.

The remainder of the Bob Westphal Memorial Cup Speedweek includes races this Wednesday at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla.; on Thursday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla.; on Friday at Outlaw Motorsports Park in Wainwright, Okla.; and on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.
