Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 10, 2014) – Despite competing with a new chassis, Trey Starks recorded a top five during his season debut at Skagit Speedway last Saturday.
Racing in a J&J Auto Racing sprint car for the first time, Starks set quick time in qualifying en route to a fourth-place result in the main event.
“The car worked well,” he said. “I still have to get a little more comfortable, just little tweaks here and there. They are a different car than anything I have driven before.”
Starks opened the night by establishing quick time around the 3/10-mile oval. That started him on the outside of the second row in his heat race.
“We got a good start and picked off another car with about two laps to go,” he said after finishing second. “The car was working good. We ran about half the race on the top and half the race on the bottom.”
With the feature being inverted by six cars, Starks started the main event on the outside of the third row.
“We ran fourth for about the first 10 laps and then got into third after a restart,” he said. “Skagit never quite slicks off. This time it was around the top and the curb was pretty heavy. Our car was too tight so I couldn’t run on the curb.”
Starks was in a close battle for the runner-up position when Austen Wheatley made a last-lap pass to steal third place.
“We were trying to pass for second when I got passed coming out of turn four,” Starks said. “I made a mistake and got caught behind the car in front of me. The thing I liked the most about this weekend was we were pretty competitive. What I like is I’m not completely comfortable in the car, yet we’re competitive.”
The fourth-place finish marked Starks’ fourth top five of the season.
“It was good to be back at Skagit, a local track that I know,” he said. “Plus it was good to get some laps before Dirt Cup later this month.”
Starks will return to Skagit Speedway this Saturday after attending his high school graduation that morning.
