(Bill W) June 9, 2014 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 race team continue their runs with the World of Outlaws this weekend in Jackson, Minnesota and Knoxville, Iowa. Last week, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver finished eleventh on Friday at the I-80 Speedway with the WoO. On Saturday, he finished ninth in the FVP Showdown at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas.
Despite coming out late, you timed in tenth quick Friday at I-80.
We were third quick hot-lapping, but we ended up going out kind of late (22nd). There were some guys who went out after us that were seventh or eighth, but I don’t think quick time was out there at that point. The format now (with the WoO), you need to be first through fifth quick with three heats, or seventh through ninth.
That put you on the pole of the heat.
We knew we needed to win (to get in the Dash). On the initial start, we were good, but some guys got stacked up behind us. On the next one, we didn’t get going as well, and Kerry (Madsen) shut us down going into one. That was all she wrote until there was a caution with two to go.
That was a good heat, and you got back in front for a lap or two.
We were able to get a pretty good run on the restart. We were able to get by (Madsen) going into one, and then I was trying to block him in the next corner. I just decided wrong, and he was able to get back by me. It was a good race for the fans. I know there were people that came down and said they enjoyed that heat race. The heat can make or break your night. We just didn’t get the job done there.
That put you outside of row five for the feature.
I think we were running ninth or so on the double-file restart six or eight laps in. I got into the back of Ian Madsen and bent a right front radius rod. When I got into him, it sent me across the track. Thankfully, I didn’t get hit by the other competitors, but I think at one time, we were back in nineteenth or twentieth and we were able to drive back through there.
You ran back up to eleventh, but I know you were looking for more.
That was a race we were looking forward to a long, long time. Running eleventh wasn’t what we were looking for, but sometimes circumstances dictate some things. I think that was the issue. I think if we had a perfect car, we may have went from tenth to sixth, but I don’t see us winning from that far back. You have to put yourself in position to start up front and we weren’t able to do that.
I don’t think many gave the show at Lakeside a chance on Saturday.
Waking up on Saturday morning in Kansas City with an 80% chance of ran all day long, I didn’t give it much of a chance. They did a good job of getting the race in. Unfortunately, the heavy track just made it narrow and really tough to pass.
You were able to qualify sixth quick.
Being sixth quick is tough. If you’re fifth quick, you’re in the Dash (with three heats), and if you’re seventh quick, you’re on the front of the heat race. Sixth is the one place it was tough to be on Saturday. It was just tough to pass. They broke a track record again there in the third heat (Brian finished fourth after starting third).
You started and finished ninth in the feature. How was the car?
We had a really good racecar. It was the best handling racecar we’ve had in a while. We just couldn’t do much with it. We were up beside Cody (Darrah) and Joey (Saldana) a couple times for seventh and eighth. We just didn’t get them cleared.
I know FVP was really active with the shows last weekend.
FVP brought 150 customers and employees both nights. They sponsored the race on Saturday at Lakeside. It was great to have all of those people there. It’s just a great company to be involved with, and it’s great to have them be a part of sprint car racing, and with our team. It’s an honor to represent them, and all our partners.
So, your runs with the Outlaws continue this weekend.
We were looking forward to last weekend, like we are this weekend. We’re really excited about getting the chance to getting back to Jackson on Friday. We’ve had a lot of success up there, and we have a lot of great fans and supporters.
You’ve obviously been good against the Outlaws at Knoxville.
It’s no surprise what our goal is at Knoxville. We’ve been good there at times this year, and lucky at times. We need a little of both this weekend. We just need to put ourselves in position in the first couple rows, and then we’ll see what we’ve got.
