(Bill W) June 4, 2014 – Attica Raceway Park is without a doubt one of the toughest stops for the World of Outlaws. That was proven last Friday night, when Ohio drivers swept the podium. With a stout forty-four car field assembled, just making the show is tough. Wayne Johnson was able to do that, however, coming home fifteenth in the main event. The #77x team will compete with the WoO again this weekend at a pair of events. On Friday, the series visits the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska, before heading down I-29 to the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas on Saturday.
Time trials with a large field like the one that was assembled at Attica are always interesting and Wayne would register the 18th quick time of the night. “We were able to come out early in qualifying,” he says. “That was a bit of an advantage for us. Still, we weren’t able to make the heat inversion. The track built a big curb off of four and they were tearing things up. (Kerry) Madsen hit the fence and he was still quicker than us. It’s a different track for sure.”
Despite not making the heat invert, Wayne was able to start and finish fifth, grabbing a transfer to the feature. He holds a lot of respect for the Ohio local drivers. “Attica and Fremont…the guys that race there are really tough,” he says. “You saw that with the top three finishers at the Outlaw show being the local guys. They have their stuff together. It’s no different than Knoxville, the drivers who run there every week have it figured out. That’s what the Outlaws run into.”
Wayne would start seventeenth in the main event and checker fifteenth. “There were forty-four cars there, and they are all good cars,” he says. “So to run fifteenth wasn’t that bad. I was back there racing with Steve (Kinser) and Sammy (Swindell). We’re in the hunt here. I just feel like we’re right on the verge of breaking out.”
The team has had the help of Rick Ferkel in figuring out the super-slick Ohio ovals. “The dirt in Ohio is so much different than I’m used to,” says Wayne. “Rick has helped a bunch with that. They have some of the dustiest tracks I’ve ever been to.”
One of those is definitely Wayne County Speedway near Orrville, where the team went to test and tune a bit with the All Stars on Saturday. “We went there to try some things, but we weren’t out there for long,” says Wayne. “We couldn’t even see the car in front of us, and I know the fans couldn’t see the cars on the track either.”
Wayne was planning on running with the WoO tonight at Kokomo Speedway in Indiana, but the race has been postponed to September 16. He will have to wait until Friday at I-80 Speedway. “It’s really too bad,” he says. “You know we were sixth with the Outlaws there last year. That was only my second time racing there, and we were in the top ten the first time too. Hopefully, we can get it in in September.”

Making his twelfth USCS start on May 29, 2008, Wayne won for the fifth time. This win came at Camden Speedway in Tennessee. Driving the Mike and Tim Hammers/Robbie Forbes #94 he led from the outset, and despite a number of cautions, lapped up to sixth. Terry Gray finished second, ahead of Lee Sowell, Don Young and Derek Hagar.
