Inside Line Promotions – EAGLE, Neb. (June 4, 2014) – Brandon Hanks captured his first top 10 of the season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last weekend during an excursion to Kansas.
Hanks rallied for an eighth-place finish on Friday night at Salina Speedway in Salina, Kan., where he made his debut at not only the track but in the state as well.
“We were really, really good in turns three and four,” he said. “It was hard to make a mistake there. But in turns one and two the car kept trying to slide up and go off the race track. I wasn’t able to get off the corner like I wanted to in turn two.”
After opening the night by advancing from eighth to fifth place in his heat race, Hanks started the main event on the outside of the sixth row.
“We jumped to ninth pretty quick and we raced Josh Baughman forever,” he said. “We fought Josh hard for eighth the entire race. We finally got him. He made me earn that one.”
Hanks, who competed in a wild battle throughout the main event with a half-dozen cars on the slick track, capped his night with the eighth-place result. It marked his seventh top 10 of the season.
Saturday didn’t go as well during his first race at Eagle Raceway for the Hinchman Racewear Eagle Nationals.
Hanks crashed on the second lap after starting on the pole of his heat race. The contact not only knocked him out of his heat race, but it ended his night as well.
“I screwed up on the start,” he said. “When I went into turn one I hit the rut. I couldn’t catch the car and ended up in the fence. I flipped two or three times. It bent the frame. We just got the car to be able to roll in the trailer and went home.”
Despite the sour ending, Hanks said he is satisfied with the weekend.
“I know we crashed out in the heat Saturday night, but I learned in that situation so it’s not a complete loss,” he said. “Any time I can get a top 10 I’m really, really happy with that night, especially with the ASCS guys because the competition is so tough.”
Hanks is scheduled to compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour this Friday at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn., and on Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.
He recorded a top 10 in his most recent visit to I-30 Speedway last month.
