(Bill W) June 3, 2014 – A big weekend with the World of Outlaws lies ahead for the Brian Brown Racing Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team. Friday night, they’ll tackle the I-80 near Greenwood, Nebraska where the Grain Valley, Missouri driver has had so much success. On Saturday, the series moves to the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. Last weekend’s show at Knoxville was rained out, but Brian had a chance to attend the induction ceremony for the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame with his partner Chuck Merrill.
Last Friday night, you were with the ASCS in Salina, Kansas.
It really was a struggle all night long. We drew a heat with some tough guys in it. We started seventh and ran seventh. It was tough to pass, and the balance of our car wasn’t too good.
That finish put you in the B main, starting eighth.
We were kind of in unchartered territory there. We worked our way up to finish fourth. The car was getting better at that point.
You started 20th in the feature and worked your way up.
We were able to get our way up to ninth with eight or ten laps to go. At that point, we got taken out from behind by another car. We spun out, and went to the back again. We came back and got ninth. It was pretty uneventful to say the least. It was one of those nights where things just didn’t quite go our way. You’ll have nights like that from time to time.
You had a special afternoon on Saturday at Knoxville.
Chuck Merrill from Maxim chassis is a longtime partner of ours and he was being inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. We were able to go there and be a part of the ceremony.
That night, you donned the #5m in honor of him.
We were able to do a special thing for him. That was his number for a lot of years. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to race. We were second quick, but we weren’t able to race. That was unfortunate, but it was great to be at such a special event.
There were others inducted that have meant a lot to you as well.
It was great to see Mark and Karl Kinser who were heroes growing up. Dave Blaney and Bobby Davis Jr. were there too. Dave Argabright was inducted too. This was one of the coolest induction classes we’ve had.
This weekend you’ll race with the World of Outlaw at I-80 and Lakeside.
I-80 is one of the tracks we’ve had on the calendar with the Outlaws for a while now. We were rained out last year, which was a bummer. We’re looking forward to it. I think we have an opportunity to win, and we’ll have about 150 customers and employees from FVP there.
You’ve also run well at Lakeside.
If everything goes well, we’re going to be in contention at Lakeside too. FVP is the primary sponsor at that event. You always get your elbows up a little bit higher when that’s the case.
