Inside Line Promotions – PLACERVILLE, Calif. (June 2, 2014) – Chase Johnson logged a consistent night during his season debut at Placerville Speedway last Saturday with the Civil War Sprint Car Series.
“The night went great,” he said. “It exceeded my expectations. Every time I’ve been to Placerville we’ve kind of struggled.”
The event opened with Johnson qualifying 10th quickest, which earned him a position in the heat race inversion. That started Johnson on the outside of the front row of a heat race.
“There was a little confusion on the restart and we salvaged a fourth,” he said. “On one start a car spun around before we completed a lap. On the restart apparently we were five feet before the line when we started. Me and the polesitter went into turn one side by side and had a great battle going.”
The front row was penalized one row and Johnson was forced to restart on the outside of the second row. He competed in third place for most of the race before ending fourth to lock himself into the main event, which he started 13th.
“We moved up to ninth place and just a little after halfway the car went away and it wasn’t enough to hang up there,” he said. “We were definitely faster than a lot of people at the beginning of the race. I was rolling the bottom in turns one and two and the top in turns three and four. After we started falling back a couple of positions I decided I needed to try a different line.”
Johnson held on for a 13th-place result.
“I would have loved to finish in ninth or a little higher, but we’ll take it and we’ll move on,” he said.
The next race on Johnson’s schedule will be his 410ci nonwing sprint car debut driving for Shawn and Cindy Thomas at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif., with the USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car Series on June 28.
