Scotty Thiel - Memorial Day Weekend Race Recap

Scotty Thiel - Memorial Day Weekend Race Recap

Three nights of racing action took place for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team over Memorial Day Weekend. Night one brought the team up to St. Croix Valley Raceway were Scotty was having a solid run before making contact with the wall and flipped. After rebounding from the wreck, the team traveled down south with the IRA series, and captured two top five finishes which included Thiel’s first recorded IRA Podium finish!

The crew set out to the St. Croix Valley Raceway on Friday for the 3rd Annual Tabor Memorial. Scotty was the 2013 champion of this event. After starting on the front row of the heat race event, Thiel never looked back after the drop of the green and would take home the heat race victory. Next on tap would be the UMSS Challenge race. Scotty would start in the sixth position for the ten lap shootout. After taking the green flag, Thiel worked both grooves of the race track to work himself up to a third place finish. Once the heat and challenge points were combined, a number was picked for the redraw and would set Scotty to start third in the 25 lap Tabor Memorial A-main event. The field took the green flag coming out of turn four. Scotty worked the low line in turn one and battled for second coming out of turn two. He continued to work the low line and pulled alongside the leader but a caution flag flew and moved Thiel back to the third spot. After going back to green flag action, Scotty decided to go up to the high side of the track. He maintained his ground and was building up the momentum to move forward. With only four laps in, Thiel battled for second going down the backstretch into turn three. He put the right rear tire right up to the cushion but slapped the wall in the middle of the corner which upset the car and slammed the front end into the wall, causing Scotty to flip over. It was not a hard hit and Scotty climbed out of the car under his own power.

“We had a great car all night. These guys worked hard to give me everything I needed out there. I screwed up… nothing else to say. I feel worse for my guys. We’ll regroup and focus on the rest of the weekend with the IRA” Stated a disappointed Thiel after the races.

The crew fixed up the 360 car that night and unloaded the 410 car to prepare for the next two nights with the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprints. Saturday brought the team down on a five hour stretch to the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI, a track where Scotty took a recent tip over at only a few weeks ago. Scotty drew a high number for qualifying and would be the 30th car out for the night. After laying down a solid 13.306 lap time, it would be good enough for an eighth place qualifying position. That effort would place Thiel to start 5th in the heat race event. After the green flag flew, Scotty charged down low and moved up to the third position coming out of turn two. He held third place for the next seven laps but fell back one spot while trying a different line late in the race. The checkered flag began to fly and Scotty finished the heat in the fourth place position and earning a fifth place starting position for the nights 30 lap A-main event. After watching the B-main and how the track conditions were, Scotty and the crew set the car up for the A-main event. The field was pushed and began to line up for the 30 lap A-main. The green flew and the field charged hard in to turn one. Scotty worked the low line again for the first lap before a red flag flew for a car that took a violent flip down the backstretch. After returning to green flag action, Scotty fell back a few spots but began to move back forward towards the middle of the race. Several cautions took place throughout the 30 lap event which helped Scotty get the field bunched back up. He took advantage of the restarts and charged down low after taking the green. He began to pick off cars and found himself battling for the third place position with only a few laps to go. A late caution came out which bumped Thiel back into fourth after making the pass for position. Once returning to green lap action, Scotty held on for only two more laps and could cross the line taking home the 4th place honors.

“Tonight was a great rebound for myself and my team considering what happened last night” escalated Thiel. “We really worked hard all night and I cannot thank these guys for busting their butts for me. Hopefully we can continue this streak tomorrow up at 141 Speedway.”

Night number three took place during the Memorial Day weekend festivities at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wisconsin. Scotty drew a 26 pill which set him to be the 12th car out for the nights Osborn and Sons Trucking Time Trials. Thiel missed the line a little and would end up being 16th quick out of 26 cars for the night but it was still decent enough to place him on the front row of the heat race event. After guiding the field to the green, Scotty charged off of turn four and never looked back. He charged all ten laps and put a good margin between himself and the second place car. That finish would place Thiel in the redraw for the night and would end up starting in the sixth position for the nights 30 lap A-main event. Once the field took the green flag for the final event of the night, Scotty tried making the top side of the track work but fell back several spots early on in the race. A few cautions flew during the early part of the race and Scotty found himself back in ninth. After going green again half way through, Scotty began to work the bottom side of the track and made up some ground. He worked his way back up to the sixth position and had the top five right in sight. The white flag flew for the final lap of the A-main event and Scotty made the pass for the third position going down the front stretch. He charged hard down the backstretch and coming out of turn four he would go on to capture his first Bumper to Bumper IRA podium finish.

“Wow this feels good! After starting the weekend out on a bad note by flipping up at St. Croix, we rebounded by having a solid night down at Wilmot with a top five and now having our first podium of the season! I cannot thank my crew who worked incredibly hard all weekend long to give me a great car. It was my fault I Friday night and I knew I had to make it up to them. This feels great for sure and hopefully we can continue this and knock out a win soon.” Thiel expressed after the main event.

Next up on tap for the Scott Thiel Motorsport team is this coming Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI and Sunday night at Angel Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI.
