Inside Line Promotions – BEAUMONT, Texas (May 27, 2014) – Since he had a weekend away from chasing the ASCS Lone Star Region championship, Graves Motorsports driver Kolt Walker made a last-minute decision to tackle the ASCS Gulf South Region tripleheader last weekend.
“There were no points involved so I wanted to go learn this car some more,” he said. “It’s so touchy compared to my other two cars to where I’m trying to learn how far I can go with things before it’s too far. It’s very sensitive to adjustments.”
The competition began last Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, with Walker winning his heat race from the pole position. He missed the feature redraw by only one position and started the main event on the inside of the fifth row.
“I really experimented a lot on Friday night,” he said. “The track was right on the top so I decided to tighten it up a lot and run my dry slick setup. If we had some long runs under green there’d be no doubt it’d play into my favor because we’d get into traffic and those guys would have to leave the top.”
Despite several cautions that kept the cars out of traffic, Walker was in contention for a top five late in the race before he dropped three positions on the final lap.
“We were running sixth until two to go and a lapped car was right in my way,” he said. “Coming to the white flag I got pinned behind him and three cars slid me.”
Walker ended with a ninth-place result.
On Saturday, the Graves Motorsports team headed to Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad.
“We were really good in the heat race,” said Walker, who rallied from seventh to third place in the heat.
Walker earned enough points to advance into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 6 in the random draw to start the main event on the outside of the third row.
“I was trying to get around (Travis) Rilat for third and the moisture came back up around the bottom and my car kept getting tighter and tighter,” he said. “At one point I got around (Matt) Covington, but the caution came back out so he was put back in front of me.”
Walker battled within the top five throughout the race before finishing fifth, which marked his third top five of the season.
Momentum continued to build during the weekend finale on Sunday at Golden Triangle Raceway Park.
After finishing where he started – fifth – in his heat race, Walker was on the move in the main event.
“We decided to keep the car free enough where we could run against the wall on the cushion,” he said. “We had just passed sixth place down the back straightaway and I went into turn three and (Channin) Tankersley got into the wall. I thought he was about to crash pretty good. When I lifted to keep from running into him, my car took a dive on the nose and we just grazed the wall and it whipped me around and tipped me over.”
Walker, who had rallied from 14th near the top five, flipped with a handful of laps remaining. He was unable to restart and was credited with a 17th-place finish.
“I really want to thank my crew for stepping up and helping out a lot this weekend,” he said.
The Graves Motorsports team will be back in action June 13 at Timberline Speedway in Corley, Texas, and June 14 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, with the ASCS Lone Star Region.
