Inside Line Promotions – VERNON, N.Y. (May 27, 2014) – Joe Trenca took advantage of valuable laps last weekend with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints at a pair of New York tracks.
The weekend opened last Friday at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, where Trenca won his heat race from the pole. It was his first heat win of the season.
“We were fast all night until the feature,” he said. “We set quick time overall for the whole night.”
Unfortunately, Trenca pulled the highest number – 12 – in the random feature redraw, which started him on the outside of the sixth row in the main event.
“I stayed on the bottom early, but I didn’t think it was faster so I went to the top,” he said. “I should have never moved off the bottom. I fell to 19th and drove back to 15th.”
After Saturday’s race at Fonda Speedway in Fonda was rained out, the Mucci Motorsports team wrapped up the weekend on Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway.
“That track is tough,” Trenca said. “If you’re going to pass you have to get them on the start.”
Trenca finished seventh in his heat race to miss a lock-in position by one spot and he then placed fourth in the B Main to transfer into the main event, where he started 24th.
“The guys in the back that we were racing with were around the bottom,” he said. “The first couple of laps I couldn’t go anywhere. We had a caution around Lap 3. I yanked the wing back after the restart and went to the top and we started picking off cars one by one.”
Trenca powered from last to a 14th-place result, which marked his fifth top 15 of the season.
“It was definitely a big learning weekend,” he said. “I learned a lot. It’s building up trust in the car.”
Trenca will compete with the Patriot Sprint Tour this Friday at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Ohio, and on Saturday at Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pa.
