Inside Line Promotions – LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (May 27, 2014) – Following a few frustrating outings, Big Game Motorsports driver Sammy Swindell capitalized on a rare trip home over the weekend.
“After Charlotte I got to go home and spend some time with a car there,” he said. “I was able to do some things different, some things I haven’t before. When you’ve done things for a long time and it’s been good, you might overlook some things. And once you see it it’s like, ‘Why didn’t I do this a long time ago?’ I’m hoping that we’re going to be back on a track a little bit.”
The big changes worked for the Big Game Treestands team on Monday at Lawrenceburg Speedway with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
Swindell qualified fourth quickest and then charged from fourth to win his heat race. After maneuvering from third to second place in the dash, Swindell started the 35-lap feature on the outside of the front row.
Despite several cautions throughout the first dozen laps, Swindell maintained the lead before a lengthy red flag was opened to crew members to make changes to the sprint cars near the midpoint of the race.
“Everything was new to us so we didn’t want to screw it up,” he said. “When you’re leading you don’t want to change unless you really have to. Don’t mess with it when you’re out front.”
Swindell restarted in the lead and held the top spot until Donny Schatz maneuvered by him on Lap 23. Swindell got one final shot with a late restart, but Schatz was able to roll the middle better and the Big Game Treestands team finished in the runner-up position.
“I went to congratulate him after the race and noticed he had a bigger left rear tire and a couple of inches less stagger,” Swindell said. “They were set up in a direction to run in a different part of the track and it worked out for them.”
It marked the sixth top five of the season for Swindell and the Big Game Treestands team, which finished with 14th-place results the previous Tuesday at New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt, N.J., and last Friday at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C.
Swindell will compete this Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, and on Saturday at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich., for the NAPA Rumble in Michigan with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
