Inside Line Promotions – GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (May 25, 2014) – John Binz is only two races into his season and he already has a podium finish.
Binz placed second last Friday at Mountain Creek Speedway with the TOWR Series in the $1,000-to-win winged micro sprint main event.
“For not being in a car for six or seventh months and getting that result this early, I feel confident that we are going to pick up a win this season,” he said.
The night started with Binz charging from seventh to a fourth-place result in his heat race, which locked him into the feature redraw as one of the top-four finishers in a heat race.
“I passed all three cars on the high side, which was pretty cool,” he said. “The first lap I followed the guys around the bottom. Then I went to the top and picked one off one corner and then the next guy the next lap. I got fourth place by a car length.”
With 12 drivers in the random redraw, Binz pulled the No. 2 to start the main event on the outside of the front row.
“I led six or eight laps,” he said. “We started getting into traffic and I started missing my marks. I kept missing my line and he got by me on the bottom.”
Binz stayed within striking distance before a red flag with a handful of laps bunched the field together for the restart.
“We went green for 22 laps and then had a red,” he said. “I thought I was going to have a chance to race him, but the motor got real hot at the end. It was up to 260 degrees sitting there under the red. It didn’t want to take off on the restart. He had four or five car lengths on me before I got to the flag stand.”
Binz held on for the runner-up result.
“It wasn’t the car’s fault,” he said. “It was about as good as it could have been. It was more of my fault than anything.”
Binz is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Kennedale Speedway Park in Kennedale, Texas, in winged action.
