Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (May 21, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. scored his first victory of the season last Saturday at his home track.
Hafertepe Jr. led all 25 laps of the ASCS Lone Star Region and ASCS Sooner Region co-sanctioned feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway to pick up the triumph.
“We’ve been so good at a lot of places and probably should have won two or three by now,” he said. “It’s satisfying to get my first one, especially building my own motor. It felt like a pretty big achievement.”
Hafertepe Jr. kicked off the night by quickly charging forward in his heat race. He was up to third on the opening lap and finished with a runner-up result, which earned him enough points to advance into the feature redraw.
“In the heat race our car actually wasn’t as good as it could have been,” he said. “We were still a lot better than other guys, but it could have been better. We just rolled through there pretty good.”
Hafertepe Jr. pulled the No. 3 in the random redraw to start on the inside of the second row of the feature.
“The car was pretty much driving itself in the feature,” he said. “We had our car about as perfect as we could. It was on a rail. It made it real easy on me.”
Despite one close call in traffic, Hafertepe Jr. cruised to the win on the half-mile track that is located only a few minutes from his shop.
The weekend opened on Friday with the ASCS Lone Star Region at Boyd Raceway in Boyd, Texas. Hafertepe Jr. charged from sixth to win his heat race and advance into the feature redraw.
He pulled the No. 6 in the random redraw to start the main event on the outside of the third row.
“We got up to third right away and it laid rubber,” he said. “We were riding around there. On the last restart (Aaron) Reutzel got pretty tight in the rubber. When he pushed out of it, it allowed Jeff Swindell to go by him and we did as well. We made some runs at Jeff, but just couldn’t get it done.”
Hafertepe Jr. ended with a second-place finish on the rubber-down track.
He is scheduled to compete in an ASCS Gulf South Region tripleheader this weekend in Texas. The action starts on Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige before the region makes its first-ever trip to Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad on Saturday. On Sunday, Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont hosts the finale.
