Inside Line Promotions – SELINSGROVE, Pa. (May 20, 2014) – Joe Trenca continues to build confidence inside his sprint car, which was evident last weekend.
Trenca had his best performance of the season and he recorded his first top 10 last Friday at Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa., with the URC series.
“It went really good,” he said. “I was very happy with it. That was our first time racing with URC.”
Trenca powered from sixth to fourth place in his heat race, which earned him a spot in the feature redraw.
“I could roll the bottom really good,” he said.
Unfortunately, Trenca pulled the highest number – eight – in the random redraw to start the main event on the outside of the fourth row.
“Right before we went out my crew chief told me not to waste my stuff on the top and wait for the bottom to come in,” he said. “We had a yellow on Lap 15 and he was reminding me to stay on the bottom. Right after that the bottom came in and we picked up a few positions.”
Trenca spent the closing laps battling the veteran Brian Carber for fifth place.
“We had a real good battle,” Trenca said after placing sixth. “We were racing hard and clean. It felt real good battling for fifth. It was a big confidence booster. You always want that one more spot. I was really hoping to get fifth, but it was nice getting the first top 10 out of the way.”
The Mucci Motorsports team wrapped up the weekend on Saturday with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints at Selinsgrove Speedway, where Trenca advanced from third to second place in his heat race.
“I just got a good start and followed the leader,” he said. “I started trying a few different lines to try out the car for the dash and feature.”
By virtue of his runner-up finish in the heat race, Trenca made his first dash of the season. He finished fourth in it before drawing the No. 1 in the feature redraw, giving him the pole for the 25-lap main event.
“We were fast all night and the car was good all weekend,” he said. “We started the feature and I had TJ Stutts on the outside of me. I think he’s won four of the last five ESS shows there. We went down in turns one and two and he beat me on the top. We were running second for about five laps.”
Trenca was in third place several laps into the race when there was a lengthy red flag.
“Since we stopped for so long the motor got cold,” he said. “We lost a few positions on the start. Then we had a vibration and I didn’t know what it was. We were coming down the frontstretch and it felt like it popped out of gear. It broke the rear end and drive shaft.”
Trenca was running in the top 10 when his race ended early because of the mechanical issue prior to the midpoint of the feature. He was credited with a 19th-place result.
“I want to send my thoughts and prayers to the drivers involved in the wreck,” he said.
Trenca is set for a Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints tripleheader this weekend, starting on Friday at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y. The team will race on Saturday at Fonda Speedway in Fonda, N.Y., and on Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y.
