Scotty Thiel – Drives to a top 10 at Beaver Dam

A weekend off of racing prepared the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to return back to the Beaver Dam Raceway for the third points night with the IRA Sprint Car Series. The last time the team competed at this track, Scotty Thiel drove to a tenth place finish. This time around, in a 360, he struggled early on but managed to come from the 19th starting position all the way up to a solid 7th place finish!

22nd quick in qualifying wasn’t what the team was looking for but they also only had their ASCS 360 motor in the car for the night as they blew up the 410 two weeks ago at Oshkosh. That qualifying run would set Thiel to start eighth in the heat race event. Moisture stayed in the track for a majority of the night which made it even harder for Scotty to move forward by being down on horsepower. The heat didn’t go as planned as Scotty struggled with the car. He would be forced to come through the B-Main in order to have a chance at making the nights 30 lap A-Main.

After making several changes to the car, Scotty prepared for the 12 lap B-main where he would have to be in the top seven spots to transfer in to the A-main event. Starting out in seventh wasn’t a worry for Thiel as he moved up to the fifth spot early on in the race. He settled in the fifth spot for all 12 laps of the B and tried a few different lines to prepare for the nights 30 lap main event.

Thiel would start in the 19th position for the A-main and knew it was going to be tough to move forward, especially with a track that still had plenty of moisture in it. The crew made very little changes to the car as Scotty mentioned the car was getting better in the B as the laps went on. The field was pushed off and began to line up into the starting positions. Once settled in, the field was given the command to give the crowd the greatest sight in motorsports, the four wide salute to the fans. After lining back up they prepared to take the green. Coming out of four the green flew and the field roared into turn number one. Scotty worked the low groove for a few laps but then jumped up top where he began to gain some ground on the field. Slowly but surely, Thiel started to make his way forward. 19 laps were complete before the first caution of the night flew as a car slowed in turn two. Scotty was just shy of breaking into the top ten. The field returned to green flag action and Scotty continued to charge along the top side of the track and gained momentum on the lead cars. With only 2 laps to go, Thiel worked his way up to the eighth position and had the lead cars within sight. A caution flew with only one lap to go which bumped Scotty up to the seventh spot. A green, white, checkered would go underway and Scotty tried to grab one more spot but fell short and rounded out the nights 30 lap A-main in the seventh position, earning another Hard Charger as he passed 12 cars.

“I was a little worried at the beginning of the night as we didn’t do so hot in qualifying and the heat. I knew we had our work cut out for us with how well the track held moisture. We got the car better in the B but after seeing that we started 19th in the main I knew I had to get my act together and focus. The car got better and better as the race went on and we moved forward pretty well. The cautions helped get the field back together but killed our momentum. Needed a few more laps and I think we could have had a top five but hey, we’ll take another top 10. Overall a solid points night for the team.” Thiel explained after the main.

Memorial Day weekend is next on tap. The STM crew will be making a three day venture as Friday night will bring them up to the St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix Falls, WI with the UMSS series. Scotty has had really good success at that track after winning three times there so far and the 2013 Open Wheel Nationals. Saturday evening will then bring the team back down in the state to the Wilmot Raceway with the IRA and they will round out the weekend on Sunday at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, WI.
