Scotty Thiel – Rebounds at Oshkosh after Rough Start to Weekend

A double race weekend presented the Scott Thiel Motorsports 410 sprint car team at the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin on Saturday and the Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Sunday. Bad luck struck several times over the course of the weekend after a good run ended short on Saturday after Thiel flipped in A-main while running 3rd and then blowing a motor up in hot laps Sunday at Oshkosh. After preparing the backup car quickly before IRA Qualifying, the team rebounded and Scotty Thiel drove his way up to a top 5 finish at Oshkosh!

Warmer temperatures and sunshine was presented finally for both nights of racing this past weekend. Scotty drew a 52 pill on Saturday at Wilmot for heat race line ups. A very fast and tacky track was presented for the heat races and Scotty would have to work his way up from the seventh starting spot. The field took the green flag and the action began. Scotty worked the low line in turn one but the few passes made would get called back after a red flag flew quickly for a car that flipped out of turn two. The field went back to green flag action and Scotty took the same line again. He worked his way up one spot down the backstretch and settled into fifth. He kept working the low line and worked his way up to third after the 10 lap heat concluded. That would place Thiel to start 5th in the night’s 25 lap A-main event.

Track conditions stayed the same all night and the cushion became bigger and a threat to keeping the car on all four. The field took the green flag and they stormed into turn one. It took several laps before the field setting in and Scotty fell back one spot to sixth after running the middle to low line on the track. A lot of moisture in the racing surface made for big wheelie all night long. Scotty struggled to keep the front end down on the track early on but settled down and managed to work his way back up a few spots. With only seven laps left, Thiel worked his way up to the third spot and after a restart, was closing in on the leader. With only five laps left, Scotty continued to work the bottom side in turn one. The car got upset and Scotty stood on the gas to get it corrected but pulled a wheelie a little too big and the car spun around off the right rear and tipped over on its side. Thiel was fine and got out of the car right away to review the damage. That would put an end on the good run he was having. “Track was fast all night long. It stayed tacky all night which was surprising. I’ll take the blame on that flip as I just got a little too impatient and got on the gas a little too hard. We didn’t have the best car tonight but I think we could have had a shot at winning. We will get this fixed up and be ready for Oshkosh tomorrow” stated a bummed out Thiel after the race.

The crew worked until 5 in the morning fixing and preparing the car for Sunday nights event at the Oshkosh Speedzone for the second stop of the IRA season. On the second lap of hot laps, Scotty came down the backstretch and felt a vibration in the car and coming out of turn four the motor let go. The crew hustled to get the backup car down from the trailer which is their current ASCS 360 car they have ran several times this year. The thrashed but managed to get the car done and would tag the end of qualifying. The motor wasn’t fully up to temp so Scotty babied it through qualifying. He would have to tag the rear of the heat race event. The top five cars would transfer out of the heat race for the 25 lap A main event. After starting in the seventh position Scotty worked the low line and worked his way up to a fourth place finish. Due to the low qualifying time, Scotty would have to start 15th in the night’s A-main event. The track was extremely slick but Scotty knew they would be okay even being under horsepower.

After getting pushed off for the main event the field would be given the command for the four wide salute to the fans. They got back in line and prepared to take the green flag coming out of turn four. Engines roared as they bunched up coming into turn one. Scotty snuck down low and pulled several cars down the back stretch. After a few laps were complete, Thiel found himself already up to the eighth position. Several cautions took place throughout the main and that helped Thiel as the field would become bunched back up. With only 12 laps completed, Scotty was up to the fifth position and continued to work his way up after returning to green flag action. He battled for the fourth place spot for several laps but finally captured it and worked hard for the third spot. The white flag flew and he tried his hardest to get setup to pass for third but came up short and crossed the line in fourth place.
“I tell you what, tonight was awesome. Well not exactly as we blew up the 410 but we showed what adversity is all about as we overcame that barrier early on and moved up 11 spots in the main with our ASCS. Man, it feels good to knock out a top 5. Feels almost like a win in our books. We have some work to do with getting the motor fixed and getting the car handling down with our 410 but overall it was a solid points night for us. I can’t thank my guys enough for working hard getting the car fixed after last night and well getting the backup ready to go tonight. I want to thank everyone else who lended a hand getting it prepared as well for us tonight.” Stated an excited Thiel after the main.

The team was originally planning on running with the World of Outlaws this coming Friday night at Wilmot Raceway but due to the motor blowing up, that canceled those plans. They will take the weekend off and regroup and prepare the cars for Saturday, May 17th at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
