Tankersley Takes Texas Top Fives to Gain ASCS Gulf South Points Lead

Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (May 7, 2014) – Channin Tankersley has climbed to the top of the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings after his most consistent weekend of the season.

Tankersley earned a pair of top fives in his Peggy and Marvin Pearson entry during ASCS Gulf South action in his home state of Texas starting last Friday at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont.

“It was pretty laid back all weekend,” he said. “We were pretty decent from the get-go. We were quick in the heat race. It just was a single-groove track and we didn’t go as far forward as we wanted.”

Tankersley advanced from sixth to fourth place in his heat race, which earned him enough points to start 13th in the main event.

“In the A Main, the front row crashed each other out on the start,” he said. “That moved us up one row. We finally got rolling and when everything got sorted out I was up to about sixth. I rode there for 10 laps or so until a caution came out. Then I got ancy and went to the top and got passed by two guys.”

After dropping to eighth on the narrow track, Tankersley capitalized on a late caution.

“I went up to the top and I got like four guys on the restart because I guess they got bottled up a little bit,” he said. “Then I dropped back down to the bottom and rode it out.”

Tankersley ended with a fourth-place result.

The team headed to Battleground Speedway on Saturday, when Tankersley won his heat race from the pole position. That gave him enough points to advance into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 6 in the random draw to start on the outside of the third row for the main event.

“Saturday night the only thing we changed all night was the tire pressure,” he said. “We were so fast out of the box it was crazy. We got up to fourth right off the bat and then up to third. Me and the two drivers in front hit a bunch of lapped traffic. After that I don’t know what happened. There was a pack of cars and we were zig-zagging.”

Tankersley maneuvered to a runner-up finish, which was his best in ASCS Gulf South competition this season.

“We’ve only run four races with Marvin and Peggy and each one we’re getting better,” he said. “I think this is the first of many great weekends to come. We’ve got to stay consistent. If we do have an off night we have to salvage as many points as we can.”

Tankersley is scheduled to return to action with the ASCS Gulf South Region on May 23 at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, and on May 24 at Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad, Texas.
