Inside Line Promotions – CALIFORNIA, Mo. (May 7, 2014) – Josh Baughman and his Jason Johnson Racing team continue to build during their inaugural season.
The team tackled a trio of Midwest races last weekend, which resulted in a pair of top 10s and valuable laps on different racing surfaces.
“I think it was a good weekend,” Baughman said. “Me and (crew chief) Wayne (Priddy) are learning more. Every week we go in we learn something new and we’re not making the same mistakes twice.”
Baughman opened the tripleheader last Friday with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at Outlaw Motorsports Park in Wainwright, Okla. Despite racing with a broken front wing, Baughman advanced from fourth to third place in his heat race to earn enough points to lock himself into the feature.
After starting on the outside of the seventh row, Baughman ended with a 20th-place result during his first career visit to the track.
“We missed some things there for the main and we just kinda held on and stayed out of trouble,” he said. “It’s not the finish we wanted, but I wanted to log as many laps as possible to learn.”
The team headed to Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for Saturday’s ASCS Warrior Region event.
Baughman charged from seventh to a third-place finish in his heat race, which advanced him into the feature redraw. He then pulled the second-highest number – seven – in the random draw to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“The track was real slick and we ran around the top playing follow the leader for a little bit,” he said. “The track rubbered up there with about eight laps to go. We tried, but just couldn’t make anything happen.”
Baughman ended with an eighth-place result.
He then decided to make his debut at Double-X Speedway on Sunday, when he finished where he started – sixth – in his heat race. That lined him up 15th for the main event.
“That place is fun,” he said. “It’s a real short track with a wall around the outside of the turns and on the inside. It built a cushion all the way around.”
Baughman rallied to an eighth-place result, which marked his fifth top 10 of the season.
He is scheduled to compete with the ASCS Lone Star Region on May 16 at Boyd Speedway in Boyd, Texas, and on May 17 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas.
