Graves Motorsports Charges to First Top Five of Season at Lawton

Inside Line Promotions – LAWTON, Okla. (May 5, 2014) – Graves Motorsports pilot Kolt Walker accomplished his mission last Saturday.

The team headed to Lawton Speedway for the ASCS Sooner Region event with a new chassis and the primary engine back in the sprint car.

“I flew in a buddy of mine, Anthony Knighten Jr., who has been crew chiefing for several years just to let him wrench on it a little bit so I could focus on my driving,” Walker said. “We got out in hot laps and were like third quick. The car drove totally different than my other car. This car was driving like a Cadillac.”

Walker lined up on the inside of the third row for his heat race.

“I was trying to be smooth and not tear anything up,” he said. “The track was extremely slick. I had some people in front of me that, to put it nicely, I didn’t know if they were going to spin out. I showed one my nose and he about ran me into the infield. Finally on the last lap I went to the top, which I should have done seven laps earlier, and made the pass.”

Walker’s fourth-place result in his heat race lined him up on the outside of the seventh row in the main event.

“That was by far the slickest track I’ve seen in a long time, which is good,” he said. “That’s what we needed to work on. I knew it was going to be a survival. It was just be smooth and stay out of the wrecks. It didn’t get near as exciting as I thought so I finally had to say, ‘Ok, it’s go time.’ The car was amazing. I couldn’t believe how good it drove.”

Walker rallied from 14th into the top five before a late-race move closed him to the bumper of the third-place car at the finish line.

“I was right on third place coming to the checkered,” he said. “That tells me we were there. We just needed to get there sooner or needed a caution.”

Walker’s fourth-place result was the team’s first top five of the season.

“I want to give a special thanks to Brian Burris for all of his help with the shocks and to Anthony Knighten Jr. for flying down and working on the car,” he said.

Walker will return to action with the ASCS Lone Star Region on May 16 at Boyd Speedway in Boyd, Texas, and May 17 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas.
