A cold Saturday evening brought the Scott Thiel Motorsports team to the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin for the opening night of the 2014 Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint car series. This was the debut of the teams 410 race season. After struggling with handling issues all night long and having to work his way through the B-Main, the young Scotty Thiel drove his way from the 17th starting position to a top 10 finish.
Scotty drew a 35 pill which set him to be the 11th car out for qualifying. He laid down a 12.579 lap time which set him 19th quick overall. After the lineups were set, Scotty would start 7th in the first heat race event.
The field took the green for the 10 lap heat race event. Scotty was fighting with the car handling from the beginning of hot laps and it didn’t get much better in the heat race. The field evened out and Thiel maintained the 7th spot for all 10 laps and would be forced to race his way through the B-main. The crew made some big changes to the car before B and it seemed to be better after the 12 lap B-main occurred. Scotty started out in the fourth position and battled for second all race long. With only two laps to go, he made the pass coming out of turn four and charged for the lead but came up short. That second place finish would place Thiel to start the nights 30 lap A-main event in the 17th position.
After giving the fans the four wide salute, the field bunched back up and prepared to take the season’s first A-main green flag. The season was under way as the field roared out of turn four. A caution came out quickly as a car got turned around coming out of turn two. A complete restart took place and the field was given the green one more time. Scotty used the middle part of the track early on but only moved up a few spots. The race track started to get rough off of turn two and upset the majority of the field’s cars. This made for passing to be very difficult as the cars scattered all over the backstretch. Several cautions occurred in the first 12 laps and Scotty was moving his way up through the field. After going back to green flag action, he managed to work his way up to the 8th position. With ten laps to go, Thiel lost a little ground and fell back to the 10th position. Not much passing too place with only five laps left and Scotty would take the checkered flag in the 10th spot, capping of a difficult start of the night with a top 10 finish.
“We struggled all night. It was frustrating in the beginning after we didn’t qualify to well. I knew we would have our work cut out for us to make it up through the heat but we struggled there to. The car was better during the B and I felt more comfortable in the car. The A-main was tricky but the car was better yet. Managed to pull off a top 10 for the first night. I feel we had a solid top 5 car but for the first 410 race, a top 10 isnt horrible. We will regroup and work on our issues for next week.” Thiel explained after the night.
The Scott Thiel Motorsports team will be back in action this Saturday night at the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin for a local show, followed by Sunday afternoon at the Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with the IRA.
