Inside Line Promotions – ABILENE, Texas (April 28, 2014) – Graves Motorsports and driver Kolt Walker are taking a big swing at their program this weekend.
The team is building a new car and putting the primary engine back in for an ASCS Sooner Region event at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., on Saturday following a struggle with the ASCS Lone Star Region last weekend.
“We’ve been struggling to find setups with that car,” Walker said. “The car just feels bound up. It’s inconsistent. We’ve changed about everything but the chassis so we’re going to put together a new car and try it out at Lawton.”
The team is coming off a roller-coaster weekend in Texas that started on Friday at Lubbock Speedway in Lubbock.
“We drew good and we went out in our heat race and were horrible,” Walker said. “The setup that we’ve had in the car, I’ve won with that several times. The first four laps were dry slick. Luckily for us it took a little bit of rubber with three laps to go and I was able to get around a car to finish fifth.”
After massive changes, the team headed into the main event starting on the outside of the seventh row on a track that was already covered in rubber.
“I ran it up to seventh within six or seven laps,” Walker said.
Unfortunately, after jockeying toward the top five in the first half of the race, the wing tree broke and the top wing fell back.
“It went from a rocket fast race car to doing wheelies,” he said.
Walker battled for a top-10 position for most of the rest of the race before pulling into the work area and discovering the problem in the closing laps. He returned to the track and managed a 12th-place result.
On Saturday, the team headed to Abilene Speedway in Abilene.
Walker maneuvered from fourth to third place in his heat race, which earned him enough points to advance to the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 5 to start the main event on the inside of the third row.
“I was running fifth or sixth and in that area for most of the race,” he said. “I just didn’t feel very good. About the last six laps or so I moved up to the top and actually ran them back down. We were decent at the end.”
Walker ended with a sixth-place result, which marked the team’s second top 10 of the season. It also moved Graves Motorsports to third place in the ASCS Lone Star Region championship standings.
