Inside Line Promotions – WILMOT, Wis. – Wilmot Raceway hosted one of the most electrifying World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series races in the history of the sport.
On Friday, May 9, the premier sprint car series will return to the flat track for the first time since 2008.
“It’s probably the flattest track we go to,” defending World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion Daryn Pittman said. “It is extremely flat and pretty small. It’s definitely unique in that aspect.”
Pittman, who currently leads the championship standings, has led on the final lap of both previous World of Outlaws main events at Wilmot Raceway. He picked up the victory in 2008, but it was the finish during the inaugural event in 2006 that everyone talks about.
“I remember that finish better than the one that I won,” he said. “We led a lot of the race and led on the white flag. I went across the finish line backwards. We were all wadded up all over each other. It was exciting.”
A trio of competitors battled wheel to wheel for the lead through the final two corners on the last lap with North Dakota native Mark Dobmeier edging out Jeremy Campbell and Pittman, who spun across the finish line after contact.
“It just got close and everybody saw the flag waving,” Pittman said. “It’s a small track and three guys were trying to get to the finish line first. It had to have been a heck of a race to watch.”
