Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (April 21, 2014) – Cole Wood knows how to pass cars.
After early incidents during his two races last weekend, Wood charged from last to earn a sixth-place result on Friday at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill., on Friday and from last to 13th during the season opener at Knoxville Raceway last Saturday.
The weekend opened with the MOWA series at Tri-City Speedway on Friday with Wood finishing where he started – fifth – during his heat race on the narrow track. That earned him enough points to start on the outside of the seventh row for the main event.
“Going into the first corner a car spun out in front of me,” he said. “I spun out and hit him sideways. Then Ian Madsen nailed me and we both flipped.”
The crash destroyed a wing, the Jacob’s Ladder, the left rear wheel and left rear shock for Wood, whose team repaired as much damage as possible before he restarted at the back of the pack. Then it was game on.
“The top was really good,” he said. “The top was way against the fence and I think a lot of people were missing it. I spent the whole night up there. We threw a couple of haymakers, but I got around most people by running the top.”
Wood passed nearly 20 cars to score a sixth-place finish, which marked his third top 10 of the season.
The team tackled the Knoxville Raceway season opener on Saturday and Wood started the event by qualifying 21st quickest. That lined him up on the inside of the fourth row for his heat race.
“I felt really good on the top,” he said.
Wood charged from seventh to fourth place in his heat to earn a lock-in spot for the main event. He started the feature in the ninth row.
“I got a little sideways on the cushion and we spun and went to the back,” he said.
After the opening-lap caution, Wood was forced to restart at the back of the 24-car field and he rallied to score a 13th-place finish.
“The car felt really good on the cushion and we were able to drive by some guys,” he said. “It was good. I didn’t really feel comfortable at all in qualifying. Feeling that comfortable in the feature is going to help us for qualifying and knowing we have a good car.”
Wood is scheduled to practice at Knoxville Raceway this Friday before competing at the famed half-mile track on Saturday.
